Yes I know cheap won’t be steel cheap, but I saw the Ferro special threat plates today. 2.7 pounds each seems amazing compared to my 7.5s but at $1200 a set I balked a bit.

What is the sweet spot for price and weight? Would consider 3 or 3+ I think as my original thinking was 4 needed always. Seems that may not be the case after training in them.

I imagine I could sell my current set to help some of the cost.

Here’s the hesco 210 I thought were the gold standard https://www.kotaoutfitters.com/product-page/copy-of-hesco-l210-level-iv-special-threat-plates-set-of-2

And here’s the ferro I saw that made me chin up a bit and consider selling random things out of the safe

Botach Battle Steel III+ single-curve plates weigh 4lb 9oz/ea and cost $129/ea and their III+ multicurve plates (what I have) weigh 5lbs/ea and cost $149/ea (weights from my own scale).
I've yet to see a Battle Steel plate fail against a rated threat.

Check the description of the ShotStop plate carefully. That plate is not rated for M855. ShotStop calls this "III+" even though nobody else in the industry would. It's part of the reason why the new 0101.07 standard can't get here fast enough.

L210 isn't level III either, they're not rated for M80 ball .308. If that's a concern of yours, the RMA 1092-1094 plate is probably the best bang for the buck on a plate not made by the country responsible for the mess we're in and not sold by a company people constantly have issues with. I've personally been screwed by Botach. Even if I did think it was at all smart to rely on Chinese mystery armor I would advise against giving them money.

I think those Ferros might be rebranded Shotstop? Weight and thickness are identical to their III+ PA, which will not defeat M855.
If you're looking for light protection and not worried about M855 then maybe try the UARM plates for $520. No idea if they're any good, just came across them while looking for new plates last night.

This rebranding stuff gets me confused and then the conflicting levels makes this adventure a pain in the ass for new people to this.

Part of me just wants to give up and get hesco pistol only plates that are $300 and stop handgun rounds. If I get shot with any damn rifle too bad :-/

Cheaper than 600/plate

That's density, weight is 3.8lb per plate

That's also a special threat plate like the L210, not rated for .308. $375 per is more than the cost of a set of L210s from T-Rex Arms.

I actually ordered a set of L210 from Trex arms earlier this week. I just ordered the GT2 because of weight and multicurve. Now I have two sets of plates I guess

These plates are rated to stop m855 and a little cheaper then hesco 3810 with the black Friday sale...

I would think m855  would be round on the check list to stop.

Note that these level 3 plates are not rated for it, but lapg level 3 did stop an m855 round from a 10 inch barrel, as you can see on this video.

Those have a .300" strike face and are essentially almost a level IV :D It's the only "level III" to stop M80A1.. LAPG Level III < Buffman for %10 off, $103/each

You can get a set of 3800's that are half a lb. lighter per plate for less money than those Shot Stop plates.

Also these companies calling a PE plate III+ just because it can stop M193

Wouldn't 3810 be a more fair comparison with the ability to defeat M855?

I really can't think of any scenario where you would want rifle rated plates and not be worried about M855

Not sure why you posted this video, was it in support of my statement (as a Lvl III it didn't fail against rated threats) or in opposition to it? Thx...

Those ShotStop plates from Ferro don't stop M855. So it seems misleading for them to call it III+ if it fails to stop one of the most common rifle rounds from the most common rifle.

Tencate CR2000 SA plates seem like another good option in this space. They seem like they fit right between Hesco 3810s and RMA 1092s. A little more money than the RMAs, but significantly thinner. A little bit heavier than the 3810s, but less expensive. Not exactly cheap, but not absurd either.

RMA 109x series

American made with American materials. Is a real III+ that stops all RF2 rounds (upcoming standard) unlike some plates that claim to be III+ but lack m855.

damn, the more I read about plates the more confused I get.

Is it worth the ~$600 cost to go with RMA 1092, which will save me 7 pounds overall?

Got mine today. Perfect balance of price, protection, weight, and thickness. Will probably keep these and sell the L210s I bought impulsively.
