I have an acquaintance that is a gun newb. He recently bought his first pistol and we took him out shooting a few weeks ago. After shooting his pistol he said he really wanted to get an AR.
Unbeknownst to me, dude drops his Biden bucks on a spankin' new Scar 17; said it was his "dream gun" from a video game? Cool with me. I always wanted to shoot one. I know dick about Scars but he asked if we could teach him how to shoot the thing. Issue is it's obviously 7.62X51 but he can only find .308 available. I was taught no 308 in a 7.62X51 rifle (7.62 is fine in a .308) The internets is telling me that it's OK with the Scar. Can anyone confirm this? I'd like to not damage this guys new toy and/or hurt someone.  Attached File |

Technically.308 can generate higher pressure than 7.62 NATO but most .308 on the market falls well within the safe levels of a NATO gun.
IIRC the case wall of the .308Win is thinner than the 7.62 NATO, meaning you can get more powder into it. |

The SCAR can handle .308 ammo. Almost every review I have read, has used .308 FGMM, as well as other 308 rounds.
I would steer clear of any of the Hornady Superformance though. ( Long pressure curve ) |

I shoot mountains of FGMM 308 and various hunting rounds in my SCAR 17. No problems at all.

I shoot all kinds of .308 and 7.62x51 through my 17s. If FN had mad the SCAR only capable of handling 7.62x51 it would have flopped.
