[Last Edit: Whiskeyballzzz]
Sorry, haven't figured out how to post pics.
In late May took my 01 Army son to the South store to pick out an M1 and we ended up leaving w/ a '54 dated H&R expert in 30-06. We were very happy as it has the greenish park and came w/ the CMP marked form fitted case. On 6/30/23, I got the itch for a .308 expert and mailed in paperwork requesting another H&R. On 7/11 I received an e-mail that my order was verified but not yet processed. Last night 7/19 received e-mail #2 saying my rifle was being FedExed overnighted. Got it before the promised 1030 hrs delivery time and am overall happy with it but am pointing out two minor disappointments. #1 despite a typed note with the order requesting an H&R, I received a serial # 2,4xx,xxx SA which appears to be a Dec. '43 receiver. Outward appearance is good, no rust and no visible pitting. Looks like greenish park to my old eyes. Have not taken it apart yet. The stock is flawless but very dry. #2 the case... blah ... My in store purchase came with the CMP marked form fit case with the plastic molded to the rifle. Today's delivery was in a generic Flambeau double rifle egg shell foam case. This will likely be relegated to my shotguns as it's monster sized and well, they are field guns. Sent an e-mail to CMP questioning the case choice. I guess I'll be looking for a BOYT like I have for my M1a that I cut the foam for. Anyone have knowledge as to why the case is different from an in store purchase? Now I wish I would have just flown up to Atlanta again and road tripped back in spite of the 10% tax. Took it apart and am greasing it right now. No.pitting at all & no rust. It has an SA trigger pack and bolt. Have not pulled the op rod. This just may be a correct grade rifle. My happy factor just went up 2 notches. |

Typically, they will try to accommodate a certain manufacturer or time era request. But if it's not in the next 2-3 rifles then you just get what's on top. It truly is luck of the draw.
The case you describe as receiving is the old style CMP cases. Another instance of grabbing the next item off the pile to send out. I've gotten both styles in one trip to the S. store. |

Listen up.
First of all you are a rifle hog. It's not right to hoard Garands. Second of all you need a proper case and proper slings. Here's a proper sling ![]() This one was made by Joel "East" Berlin. Call him up and tell him that Fluffy the Cat sent you. Call him at 1-201-674-1084 Here's a proper case by Boyt. It is canvas with waxed cotton twill. It is perfect Garand case. https://www.amazon.com/Boyt-Harness-Signature-Scoped-Pocket/dp/B00542K5XQ The Garand in the picture is BMR 66. It is in 6.5x55mm ![]() |

Sigh ... Not even the courtesy of a reply Re: the case.

CMP goes to different vendors for cases all the time. They will vary based on when you order where it is shipped from etc.
It is not the package but the contents that count. I myself HATE hard cases. Bulky clunky hard to carry give me a soft case any day. They can’t always honor requests for specific maker base on what is in stock. As long as it shoots well live with it |
|
|
The CMP cases are meh. They can only be used for one thing, m1's. Why limit yourself to that? Get a nice soft case that can be used with multiple guns.
If you really want a CMP molded case then check out the CMP forums as there are guys selling them all the time. I think I have one or two that I have never used. |

I like the mix of cases and I can use the general foam cases for other rifles such as 03's, Mosins, K98's, Enfields, Carbines... The form fitted M1 cases are nice, but are a one trick pony. If you want one, keep an eye on the CMP forums for notices of when they start being used again and order another rifle. Or buy one from the marketplace over there. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edit to add my latest Rack Grades (missed the Service Grades), One Springfield Armory with a weird stock stamp. and a H&R that was rebuilt at Red River Army Depot and had a grenade sight removed. ![]() ![]() Chinese? Taiwanese? Both are Philippine returns from the FOIA requests. ![]() |

I received my second M1 Garand on Wednesday, generic case . Per the CMP , The case will ship at a later date , check your online account on the EStore for notes on the bottom of your invoice .

I prefer the generic cases for versatility. The green ones were awesome.

Those thin shell hard cases are kind of lame in my opinion. While most of my garands came in cardboard boxes with egg crate foam I have a few, or a couple green cmp marked ones. I NEVER use them. I had junk firearms hard cases at work like those, fiddle with them to get the two halves to mate...then the mating effort springs apart because too much gun in there, busted buckles.
My best suggestion, get a good soft case. My favorites were Eagle but they don’t make them in the models I love anymore. If you need a hard shell case buy a good one with no foam. Put gun in soft case and pack in hard case. Great set up for those fly to destination events. Otherwise a big hard case can be a nuisance to fit in certain cars. I have driven suburbans or four door jeep’s since 2001. I could stack hard cases with the best of them going to a shoot but some cars won’t even allow a long hard case to fit in the trunk and may be a challenge across the back seat. A good soft case is so much easier there. Don’t get me wrong, I bought huge aluminum double gun cases from Ziegel, giant hard shell plastic from Pelican and Storm. They were the in thing especially on arf......threads of case outlay designs, make your own foam and foam cutters. I almost never use them. They are a bulky, heavy pain in the ass. I use the eagle soft cases and a few Boyts I bought later to accommodate stupid long guns like the Krag or the Karl Gustav M96. The Boyd’s rock too, especially if you buy the nicer ones. Great pistol rug cases too. I say all that because I came full circle from Kmart Kolpin basic soft cases, to Flambeau, Doscosil plastic hard cases, to Aluminum and Pelican type cases then back to soft cases with ballistic nylon Eagle and heavy canvass Boyt. I suspect you may end up going full circle too. |

If we would have had the stocks of 7.62x51 that we had of 30/06, the Garand would have been made with a 7.62x51 [.308] barrel. The Garand caliber was simply because we had so much 30/06 stored from previous engagements and wars.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I left the old time dope on it, it's pretty damn close with USGI Match ammo. Mine built by Charlie Frazier from Crane Naval. Yes I have the correct leather sling that came with it. ![]() |

Out of the CMP cases that have been available I only trust the green pillarlock cases for air travel. I have two Pelicans that are both used for air travel with firearms, other than that I don't use hard cases. |

Exactly.........Just saying that if we had used .308 in WW1 and had huge stocks of it, the Garand would have been made in that caliber. 30/06 wasn't Garands first choice of calibers as I [maybe mistakenly] recall, I thought it was .276 cal. [Pederson] View Quote Actually his prototypes started in 30 cal. It was not him that wanted 276 Pederson. The military was considering a smaller cartridge. This forced his first tested rifle to be in .276 Peterson. Ultimately the war department chose to stick to 30 cal and liked Garand’s design. https://www.americanrifleman.org/content/gas-trap-garand-the-first-m1-rifle-design/ |

@Whiskeyballzzz,
Did you have any commercial replacement parts on your Expert Grade? I've seen reports of new elevation pinions, gas cylinders, and gas plugs showing up on the current M1's. I was kind of hoping for a CMP gas cylinder on my Rack grades. I like to add oddball items to the collection. While I haven't had a chance to tear down my rifles yet. I did have a neat op rod cut conversion I haven't see before. Looks like they took an endmill down the side of the op rod. ![]() |

Are people really complaining about the case their M1 came in? My first M1 came in a cardboard box with a foam lining. The case or box is to protect the rifle during shipping. THAT is what matters most.

No offense, but I think your expectations were off if you were disappointed that you didn't get an H&R just because you included a note.

As that's now water under the bridge, I'll be getting a BOYT and cutting it like I did for the one I have for my M1a. |
