I think I want a Benelli M4 or M2. However a KSG may be more ergonomic for me.My experience with shotguns is minimal. Another criteria is that I am capable of also using while wearing a plate carrier.

My question is Im broad shouldered and 5-4” not sure if I would have any issues with either Benelli?

Hard to go wrong with a Benelli. If you aren't going to hang a bunch of stuff on it I'd get the M2 and take the money you save and put it towards ammo. If you plan on adding a bunch of accessories that adds a lot of weight than the M4 might be a better choice because the gas system it uses isn't affected by extra weight like the inertia system the other Benelli models uses.

Doubt I would add more than a light, collapsing stock and increase capacity. Reading about this 922(R)

At 5' 4" I strongly suggest you check out youth models for fit, and shop for models that have a short or collapsing stock available.

The LOP is going to be a real PITA to deal with

I was going to get a KSG when they came out...until I saw an article which, unlike almost all others, didn't glow about it. In fact, the writer followed the concept back to a shotgun in South Africa and told have it was patterned after that. No problem so far.  Then the author told about how easy it is to "short stroke" a KSG and how difficult it is to get it cleared once that happens. He mentioned how the Remington 870 was idiot-proof (sounds my style) and explained how it was difficult to get it to short-stroke.  I bought an 870 shortly thereafter.

Maybe they've fixed the problem, but I don't think so. Maybe someone who is more of a shotgun specialist, which I am not, would like to chime in.

Benelli M4 or Beretta 1301

I own both and both are excellent

Everything else on the market is trying to compete with these two.

The 1301 is not offered in a SBS version so my M4 is a 14”

Unless you have to have a Benelli M4, there are clones of it for less than half the money. I love shotguns and have 6 or 7 of them (Benelli M1, Vepr12, Rem 870, Keltec KS7, Moss 590, etc).

I don't know if Benelli M4 is worth the money for me. I'd love to have one, but for the $2k, I can buy a lot of shotguns.  Hell, I didn't pay that for my PVS14 and that gives me super powers.

I think a great entry into shotguns would be a Lynx12 12ga Saiga clone. For $500-600 bucks, it offers a lot for the money. If I didn't have my Vepr12, I would definitely get one of those.

I’m looking into those 1301s now. Checks a lot of boxes for me.

I own several M2's M3's M4's a Vinci and 2 super Nova's.

My M2's and M4's have run absolutely great, and I shoot them a lot. I rarely have  functional issues, the few I've had were caused by low powered ammo, 1oz under 1300 fps cheapy trap shells. Otherwise high base 2 3/4" and 3" run like a raped ape. Cleaning an M2 is simple, an M4 takes a little more effort. LOP on a pistol grip stock is little long, a field stock cuts it down, slightly more handy. Try and shoot them both before you buy, get a feel for them. You'll figure it out from there.

Check out the Panzer M4 which is a Benelli M4 clone. I've seen them listed online for $549.99. I don't know what the current price is for a Benelli M4, but when I bought mine several years ago it was at least twice the price of this Panzer M4. With the cost savings you could install a full length magazine tube and most any other upgrade parts. It is said to be compatible with Benelli aftermarket parts.
