Have a 1976/1978 or so purchased new in .44 Magnum. Various handloads with both Sierra and Hornady 240 gr. (using H110 or Unique) lacketed HP's shooting extremely erratic at 50 yards (I mean "all over the place"). However, some .44 Special reloads group under 4 inches. Just can't figure out the extreme dispersion and lack of consistency, especially with the Unique powder. Loads are right out of the manuals. Brass is Federal reloaded not more than 2 times. Using an Aimpoint T1 for most precise aiming point I am capable of. Any one else experience same or suggest alternative bullet/powder loadings.

Get rid of the Aimpoint and get a good bench set up....see if there's any difference.....shrps74

I am shooting from a heavy bench, sand bags supporting the forend and using a rear bag as well. Aim point is a white pie plate and the red dot at minimum brightness held dead center in the pie plate. Don't think I could hold any better but with a 4x scope. Thought for a while it was the Aimpoint red dot drifting until some .44 Special handloads and Hornaday factory's printed under 3 inches ES. All loads are crimped per recommendations for H110.

Check the muzzle crown. Do you clean it with a rod?

I have one of these guns, have had a couple others in the past. I also have one in 357 and will shoot rings around the 44.
Problem 1 - twist rate is 1:48, ridiculously slow. Problem 2 - Oversized bore on many of them If you’re shooting jacketed bullets, try 180 or 200 grain bullets. These will help with the slow twist barrel. If you shoot cast bullets, try oversized bullets, I use .432 bullets. Shoots better with these. I plan to try 200 grain cast bullets, powder coated and sized to .432. I have considered having mine rebarreled. The rifle is a keeper, would be a favorite if it shot better.

I like the rebarrel idea better than drilling and taping for a real scope. I have tried scout mounting on my .357 and its ok and groups very well at 50 yards, but it looks like...?
Will definitely try 180's before my next move. Thanks for the suggestions.

Dump that sight mount and reinstall the iron sights, or mount a Williams receiver sight.

...at 73, my eyes can't group one reload from another with any precision, so my plan was to use the optic up to a point where I knew the best bullet/power combinations, and go back to the irons. ironically, in my day as a Marine, I was very proficient with iron sights...

Try some softer lead bullets in a moderate load. As mentioned there are oversized barrels floating around and they just won't group well with jacketed bullets. I had a Browning BLR of similar age that shot 12 inch patterns that I eventually just traded off, gunsmith looked at it and everything ("it's just what that particular gun is capable of - borescoped and crown check, gun shot, scope checked").

Dump that sight mount and reinstall the iron sights, or mount a Williams receiver sight. I can't recall right off the top of my head, but are all the Browning 92's drilled/tapped for receiver sights? I know none of my Interarms/Rossi 92 clones are, but would love to be able to mount a rear peep on mine. My first concern would be the rigidity of your sight mount, I have not had good luck with these type setups in the past. |

My Browning is not drilled/tapped for anything. Just a rear dovetail. Front sight is fixed.
Yesterday I fired some good tight groups with Hornady 180 gr. 44 Special. Then fired some new SigSauer 200 gr. 44 Special that keyholed way off to the left in a wild pattern. Go figure? So in retrospect, I now think my initial assumption that my eyesight was the issue with the original iron sights was incorrect--it was the heavier .44 magnum loads not stabilizing. Next step is to reinstall the factory rear iron sight and re-fire the 180 gr. Hornady .44 Specials... |

The T1 has really bad parallax issues that were partially fixed on the T2.
