Guy at work is downsizing and brought this M1 in. It’s gonna be my first Garand, his asking a grand.

What do y’all think?

It looks like it was rebuilt by the CMP.

It has the CMP stamp on the stock and it looks like a new Criterion barrel

It looks like it was nicely refinished.

The rifle was manufactured in October 1941.

Thanks fluffy, would this be a shoot regularly or once a year and baby it Garand?

Shoot it regularly GARAND. Keep her lubed up properly, and shoot the right ammo and it will last you a long time.

ETA.  The M1 GARAND likes grease.

Buy it, then go to this page to learn disassembly and proper lube with grease and reassembly.

http://civilianmarksmanship.com/assemblyhtml/reassemblefeed2.html

Only use 30-06 ammo designed for the M1 Garand (Not Grand). Besides milsurp stuff, American Eagle, Sellier and Belloit, and PPI sell 30-06 loaded to medium pressures for the M1 Garand. Modern hunting rounds are too strong and can damage the action over time.

It is the quintessential shooting Garand.  Shoot it all the time.  Just keep it properly greased and use proper ammo.

And make sure you change the operating rod spring regularly.  They say that the spring should be changed every 3000 rounds; however, I believe in changing the spring every 1500 rounds.

A weak operating rod spring can result in damage to your receiver and a good fresh spring is good insurance.

Orion 7 makes a very high quality op rod spring and should get one and install it in your rifle.

Always good to have at least one 'beater' M1 in the safe.

Pound M2 ball through it - 'slam-bam' -  all day long.

Wife’s from Cuba and the Garand appeals a lot to her. I’m from Singapore and the Garand appeals a lot to me.

It just feels right, bought home to us on Sept11 2018 and a birthday just before WW2. This one’s staying in the family.

Can’t wait to bang bang bang bang bang bang bang bang ping!

You have a great 'shooter' M1 there.

Now go shoot it and have fun!

Post up some pics of your first targets once you've got it zeroed.

Don't worry about the old "M2 ball ammo only" myth.  You can shoot just about any commercial ammo 180grns or less with no issues... grease your rifle correctly and shoot the piss out of it.

It’s HXP not HPX.

It’s great ammo. Better than the LC delimited MG ammo I got when I got my first M1.

It’s greek army ammo made for the M1.   Non corrosive and as accurate as any ball ammo.  Considerably better than that delinked LC I mentioned.

I like it nice score. Now that the Garand bug has bitten, you are infected and the only cure is more Garands. Like everyones been saying keep it greased. Only thing Ill add is do your homework in regards to up keep on your stock .  There is a ton of info out there and even more opinions on what to use, but its all basically personal preference.

It's definitely a CMP Special Grade

CMP SPECIAL: (Excellent)

CMP's new grade of M1 Garand. This rifle consists of a new production stock and handguard set with CMP cartouche, a new production barrel and new web sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. Receiver may have pitting (as seen in the picture below). See item for details.

Springfield Specials were about ~$1300 new and Winchesters were ~$1500 if memory serves.

Did it come with the CMP case? Paperwork?

I don't know what the Special Service Grade were going for recently but we bought one from CMP in April, 2012 and it was listed at $999 so getting one it that good of a condition for $1,000 today is a great price.  BTW, with the Criterian barrel and a good rebuild, our's is an excellent shooter and considerably more accurate than any standard barreled GI version, even more accurate than my son's absolutely pristine HRA Correct Grade with a 1+ throat and muzzle.

ETA:  The HXP Greek ammo is absolutely 1st rate and as accurate of a fmj rd as you'll find.  If you decide to handload for your M1, pay attention to the special load data for M1s as using too fast a powder can damage the op rod. Master PO's webpage with M1 Garand load data (Courtesy of the NRA) is a good place to check out. Be sure and read his comment about Mil vs Commercial case volumes and use the correct powder charge weights.

Good grab, OP. I'd have trouble passing it up.

You may hear Garand Gatekeepers give you guff about it not being "original" but so what. As long as the original owner didn't booger it up it should be a good shooter.

You can buy a CMP case from the CMP, speaking of which, join the CMP.

Sweet! I know it's not a Garand... but I just got a Springfield Armory M1A... I'm happy.
