Probably not what you are looking for but I used Alumahyde on the stainless barrel/receiver here.

Don't know if it's the best way or how durable.  I usually just shoot them with Alumahyde as I tend to rust everything.

Sorry I guess I should have said this is for a bolt. So any kind of paint is not really an option.

I just got the Caswell kit linked above, today. I got it to do a stainless 1911 barrel. I should have it done within 24 hours. I'll let you know how it turns out.

I use ferric chloried to darken stainless.  Different stainless steels will get different shades.  It will darken it in seconds.  It will change dimensions if you let it in to long.  Its best to mask off bearing surfaces.  I use nail polish. I also have mine diluted 50/50 with distilled water.  It actually works better that way.

I usually think of black oxide for stainless, but have only used on gas blocks and barrels.  Why would you blacken a stainless bolt?
