I think most chest rigs being made these days are modular, so you find a rig you like and then the pouches that you like, and attach them. Lots of options in that context.
I'm still using a belt and suspenders setup, using mostly surplus gear. |

Get a belt and put at least a couple of the mags on there.
My modern FAL/AR-10 chest rig is a Blue Force Gear RACKMinus with two double .308 Ten Speed mag pouches. Four mags on the rig; everything else on the belt or the pack. Esstac KYWIs are also excellent. |

Was leaning towards a classic Rhodesian style but then thought plates would be cool since I already have ceramic in my 5.56 setup plate carrier that are easily swappable. |

For armor get a proper plate carrier, because having only the one plate in the front sucks.

I just use G-Code Scorpion mag pouches...pistol variant fits all pistol...rifle variant fits all NATO type platforms (ARs, AR10, SCAR, FAL, M1A etc...)...have not tried AKM

Six to eight FAL mags are going to weigh a lot.
If you want plate pockets perhaps an Eagle Rhodesian rig which is basically a chest rig with s plate pouch. Then you could go with HSGI Taco’s or G-Code Scorpion pouches which are nice because you can use them with FAL or any other .308 or 5.56 mags.  Attached File |
