The Beretta CX4 Storm is a 20 year old carbine that hasn't seen many changes over the years. If you could redesign it today, what would you change about it and why?

The operating system is sound but yes it could really use an MLOK handguard and adjustable stock. Building integrated flip up sights like the ones the Tavor/X95 have within the picatinny top rail would be nice too.

Yeah it's a great shooter but for sure I would want a flat top and side folding options. Those things are achievable through Sierra Papa but I don't think there will be much demand for Beretta to make any updates to the CX4 because they are releasing a new PCC called the PMX which does several of the things you are suggesting. Whether they bring it to the US market or not is another question.

There are also some problems with some of these changes being made because it would violate some federal laws. I don't remember all the details but I have a whole thread about the CX4 here where a lot of these things are talked about quite a bit.

More info on the PMX

Change the design of the grip to make it easier to use the gun with gloves on.

Side folder. Sierra papa has the trigger handled.

The only change I'd like to make to mine would be a metal butt plate with a storage gate. Lots of room in that stock.

Most of the guns I've sold over the years, was a good call.

My CX4 was not.

I should buy another one.

Made in USA, or at least with enough parts to avoid 922R.

A stock that can be shorter, plus folding would be even better.

Improve grip ergonomics and controls from pistol to be more carbine like.

Is the PMX even confirmed to be coming to the US at this point?

More of a tactical style stock instead of the PC one.

I don’t own one but had the chance to handle & shoot one.

A side folding adjustable stock & threaded muzzle would be the first changes.
Everything else was fine imho

An ARX-100 style folding stock would be nice but on mine the only thing I'd change is to lose the ears for a flattop.
The factory sights aren't bad but mine's accurate enough it makes good use of it's 4x compact scope. But took a few tries to get a mount that worked.
I just filed the sear on my trigger to lighten it up a bit. Not a stellar trigger but in the world of PCCs there's some pretty crappy triggers.

I think I’ve owned two of them .  I just couldn’t warm up to the design.  They’re not fun to shoot (ergonomically speaking) and aren’t fun to look at.

They’re similar to the ARX 5.56.  Functional but ugly and cheap feeling.

I had one in .45 acp.  It was cool.  As I recall the trigger was so-so.  It ate a couple of red dots I put on it by shaking the emitters loose.  As an older guy the open sights were almost useless.  Couldn't focus on the front sight.  It was reasonably fun and if I could find another at a decent price I would probably get it.

Not a very attractive design but a pretty practical one, and a perfect carbine for the smaller / novice person in your family.
I like the idea above of storage in the stock.

Change the pistol grip geometry. It's hot trash.

Change the fore end to remove the bottom slope and allow a modular forend design to add a full length pic/mlok rail.

Remove the stupid extendable mini rail on the front.

Full length pic rail on top. Remove stupid fixed sights and add rail mount sights.

Change stupid trigger/hammer/sear system and replace with a design more like the AK or Garand/M14 series.

Change entire rear stock to a type that either takes AR stock tubes, or a vert pic rail gor all the current market offerings that bolt on a pic rail.

Sell factory short barrels for customers that SBR their guns.

Offer USA manufactured parts for 922 requirements for those who want to SBR.

Basically a complete EXTERNAL with a minor internal (trigger pack) re-design.

That being said, i love shooting my current CX4, and i enjoyed the modding process to make it SBR compatible.

I would keep the stock the same as it is, Im sure alot of people dont like it, but making it take AR style stocks or have a pic rail will kill much of its character. But adding the ability to store a mag or two like the S&W FPC might be a nice addition.

Drop the large ears for sights, and make it a long top rail with flip ups.

Change the handguard to be to M-lok rails, and than have a handguard cover that mimics the original handguard style, like what they did with the ARX100 and its handguard.

16” barrels are pretty sweet for .357 magnum, but yeah, not much gained in 9mm.

However, that’s what we can buy OTC at the moment.

Any pcc that doesn't have a magwell in the grip is retarded. That is what makes them so compact and awesome. What's worse is running pistol rounds through full size rifle receivers. Now that is aids!

Well I'd have to disagree, if you reload you can use powders in 9mm that burn slow enough to use that much tube.

If you don't reload then yeah, it's not a huge benefit.

Rather than move the production line they're just discontinuing it altogether.

16" will get you pretty zippy performance w/ lighter bullets:

http://www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/9luger.html

The 50 grn Liberties really fly out of 16", according to Buffman - but still won't exceed 11" in gel.

I recently loaded up some 9mm with 147gr Federal HST over 5.0gr Power Pistol. It is a slower powder and according to GordonsReloadingTool it should be adding just over 200fps from a 16" barrel than a standard 5" pistol barrel. Haven't had a chance to shoot it much less chronograph it but it should be an additional 200FtLbs (approx.) which is a definite upgrade in power level.
The idea of using a slower powder to add velocity in a longer barrel is a very sound concept.
YMMV.

Stock options.

If a fixed stock, then some mag storage ala Steyr Scout.
Otherwise, either a side folding or PDW type stock would be awesome.

But my biggest gripe?  Make the grip end with the magazine, so that if you slam the mag home with the palm of your hand that your skin doesn't get pinched on the magwell funnel/grip overhang.

The trigger feels like it was borrowed from a staple gun.  It does eject left, however:

Definitely the trigger.  Nobody should sell a gun with a trigger that bad.  You shouldn't have to buy hundreds of dollars worth of after market parts to get an acceptable trigger.

Personally, I'd rather see an SBR version readily available, but of the options you listed I went with the trigger. Overall I think it's a great gun, and while it may benefit from a new "skin" that allows for smaller packability, I'm not sure Beretta is going to take the time to do that. I could be wrong though.

Factory SBR with threaded barrel.
Folding and collapsible stock options.
Better trigger.
More magwell options, including one to share mags with the PXM.
Make the aesthetics look less like it has a chromosomal abnormality.

Nothing.  The trigger isn’t great but I shoot it very well and don’t notice how bad it is unless I am dry firing it.  The sights and stock are part of its unique character.  Sometimes I think I would like a threaded barrel just because, but I probably wouldn’t use it even though I do have a 9mm can. The price maybe?  But I got a good deal on a used one and love it.  I like it more than my 9mm AR that I can add whatever stock, trigger and whatnot that I ever wanted and I still prefer the beretta.
