So don’t know much on the technical sides of night vision. Have used a lot but never had WP before. I have a set of L3 PVS-31 that have a DOM of 2018. When I’m looking at light sources like on houses, or a car goes by, etc…. Basically any light source, and not like I’m strong at it, when I move the nods around it leaves light black marks like it’s drawing lines and the light source is the pen.

Is this normal for WP? Is it because the tubes are old or have a lot of use? They never stay when the u it is turned on and off and there’s sone downtime in between, but is it an aging tube or normal?

What happens when you turn the gain down to a reasonable level?

It's completely normal and not a sign of an aging or defective tube, it's a sign that you're looking at lights that are brighter than you should be looking at and it is not good for the tube. White and green phosphor do this, some tubes are a lot more sensitive to this "streaking" than others, no rhyme or reason why.

Got it all figured out. Guess tracing happens in certain tubes and not a big deal. It was my first real experience with the new WP stuff and he noticed. I’d turn my head past a light and then boom. Squiggly lines drawn about. I usually let it run and it goes away.

No black boxing needed and not using FP laser strikes to em. Ambient light caused it in homes and perimeter of homes, vehicles, etc…. Not concerned just wanna know why now.

This above....when you first turn them on you will get those lines you mentioned op. But as unit warms up they will go away.

Old post I know but a great question.
