I’ve had Mosins for over 20 years. Never have I seen rust on a bolt. I’ve had barrel bands rust, spots of rust on the receivers, etc but never seen rust on a bolt. (It’s 100% humidity here almost year round - *everything* rusts)

I can’t imagine them making bolts out of stainless steel, but if they were just regular steel left in the white I don’t understand why they don’t rust, at least not easily.

My M1895 Chilean Mauser has a bolt like that.

However, I am not a metallurgist, so I can't answer your question.

I believe they're just polished steel. I've seen rust on them.

Don't bolts have a high nickel content which makes them more rust resistant?

I dbout they are, and I know from collecting them they will indeed rust.

I agree they don't seem to rust as easily as you might exspect. I would suspect the alloy they use is semi corosion resistant, probibly with a higher level of nickle or cromium but not nearly what we would consider stainless. The very high level of polish they did on them and cosmoline are probibly two of the main factors. Short of boiling your bolts to clean them they will still have wax or grease in the metal pors from the storage process.

They're not stainless. I've seen them rust.

I've also seen stainless steel rust.

This.

Everything rusts here in Louisiana, unless meticulously maintained.

Other militaries (Germans) left their bolts in-the-white also. It was an inspection point, to gauge the troops' maintenance level.
