Centerfire is selling Mossberg 500 parts shotguns for 150.00. Does anyone know why these are worth the price of a new Mossberg? I've got an aluminum receiver 500, but isn't as nice as a 870.
thoughts? |

I want to know as well. Curious as to why you call them "parts guns" - I assumed they are old police turn-ins?

You'd be far better served w/ a Chinese H&R Remington 870 copy - imported by Remington's subsidiary:
https://www.centerfiresystems.com/p-18045-hr-72260-np12s8-pump-12ga-28-ctmd-syn.aspx Or a Maverick 88, made by Mossberg, basically a 500 w/ a cross-bolt safety. |
|
I broke weak and ordered one. I like old shotguns, let’s see what happens...
|
|
I like old guns too but I'm not in at $149. That's too high on these guns from the pics. $79-$99 from what I saw and I'd jump. By the time you factor shipping and FFL fees you can buy a decent used Mossberg or new Maverick in my area.
|
|
|
Yeah I'd jump all over this at $79-99!
Thats some old ratty shotgun goodness right there. They've already been thrown down the driveway. |
|
I saw those to. I want to know what dip shit was painting and decided not to throw a drop cloth over all the shotguns in the room?
In what world to you haphazardly spill paint all over a pile of shotguns, then try to sell them? |
|
From what I've found on the web I believe they're Malaysian military surplus. If they have an "ATM" marking that will confirm.
I'm sure the red paint means something (training use, taken out of service, whatever), it's not an uncommon thing for foreign surplus but it certainly could've been done more neatly. I ordered two for the hell of it, we'll see how they turn out. They're $149 shipped, and my guy only charges $25 per form 4473 (as many guns as I want)... so if I can rehab them for under $50 in parts each I'll feel like I did OK. Of course, I'm a sucker for Mossy 500s and any military shotgun with a bayonet lug, and these are both, so I'd be OK having as much in one as a used field gun. They're definitely in truck gun condition. Sportsman's Outdoor Warehouse had a small lot of 870s with the bayonet mounts a while back that were traceable and marked to Ohio National Guard. They were in better condition than these, but they sold out quick and prices on the secondary market went through the roof. I'll update when they come in with what actually shows up. Hopefully they clean up OK. At least Mossy 500 parts are easy enough to come by. |
|
Interesting to me (sort of want).
Price seems out of line by a factor of 2X. Sure seems like fork lifts and dumpsters were involved along with not giving a shit. I really like blued steel and wood on old shotguns but these look pretty far gone |
|
I can find used but complete and working 500s in MUCH better condition for $150 all day long at local gun shows.
As others have said a NEW Mav.88 or Chinese 870 clone would cost you about the same price delivered. I enjoy rescuing 500s & 870s. If I could get those for $75 out-the-door, I’d be in for a 6 pack. |

I agree $150 is too much.
Are they worth more because they come with a bayonet mount? |

I think so. It's a surplus military shotgun with a bayonet lug. Sort of like the Winchester M97 trench guns. The only difference between those and a M97 field gun is the barrel length, choke, and bayonet mount/heat shroud. And a couple thousand bucks. They might not be worth a premium to everybody, but I like them. That said, we'll see what kind of pile of parts shows up. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

What the hell, I bought one. I have a Mossberg 500 that needs a safety fixed already. Will see what this beater needs.
|
|
They are playing on the fact that they are retired military, police, etc shotguns, but they are way over priced. I would bet the majority of them are going to need new trigger groups, that is unless these were actually spec'd with the metal trigger group, which all of the 500's we had in the Armory when I was in the service had metal trigger groups, that you did not see in civilian models very often in that time frame.
That said, I can buy one and pay no transfer fee as I hold an FFL, but I can buy a new one with a warranty for not much more, so these would be a very hard pass for me. |
|
Ive bought some third world junk before. I can tell you a screwdriver is a rare object in these countries
I like fixing stuff and I have parts from another if needed. Almost all of these in the pics look like the safeties are gone. And like said above trigger groups are probably fucked. I already ordered a safety setup. I have two other 500s and both have had safety issues over the years. |
|
I picked up a dirty but rarely fired 1990 590 from the LGS last month for $150. No bayonet lug, but did have a laser forend and was in very good condition. These look so bad I'd have a hard time shelling out $150 for a worn out project.

Where in Malaysia? Anyone verify anything about where they came from? I sent some of the pics to a friend who doesnt shop online and he wants one. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

What are the odds that any of these saw combat? Just spitballing in light of all the overseas fighting. I remember in House to House a good guy blasted a bad guy with a shotgun. Could have been a 500 or a 590, maybe? |

Well, too late for all you fence sitters They are now “OUT OF STOCK”.
For those who rolled the dice, please share your box opening. |

No shipping notice as of yet. Will post my progress on this shit show haha.

I'm still playing with the Westernfield I bought for $100.
Making some ergonomic changes. |

I wonder if they only had the nine in the pics? My FFL is going to open that box and go wth did he buy this crap for?
I bought some of those U-fixem mausers years ago. He was scratching his head on those. |

View Quote Best deal I got was 4 Turkish Mausers for $100 ($25 each) delivered to my door step I would have really liked to get in on one of these 500s but I just can't move past the fact that I can buy a NEW Mav.88 for about the same price delivered. Still, I likes me a wood stock and the Bayonet Lug with possible foreign police/military contract is intriguing. Again, buyers, please keep us updated with what you got, what it needs and how it turns out once you clean/fix them up a little bit. I am really curious. |

I ordered one. Should be getting to my FFL today if tracking is right.

Picked mine up today. The thing is bone dry. Has been sitting a long time. Action was locked up, safety still worked. The take down button was pushed in and stuck. Tried to mortar it nothing. Pulled the trigger pack and still nothing. Sandy dry inside. Reset the trigger and held down on the slide release button and slapped the fore grip and she broke open. Springs are shot. Hammer seems really weak. Everything seems to work just dry and worn out springs. Mines complete except for the butt pad. I tore it down and threw it in the dishwasher Everything was finger tight. Fore grip locking nut unscrewed by hand, mag tube unscrewed and spring was so worn the mag tube follower wouldnt pop out. I had to keep fiddling with it and it shot out. https://i.imgur.com/bvLUzXs.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/EAOKlLX.jpg?1 https://i.imgur.com/PgHg1yJ.jpg https://i.imgur.com/FhjDVtj.jpg https://i.imgur.com/QaOwRrv.jpg https://i.imgur.com/iJAdiK8.jpg Safety is partially present and works. Seems like an awesome relic/project but not a great deal for a user.

I just got home from work. I ran the serial number and its 1980-1981 built.
|

I would not be surprised if they are worth more down the line
thanks to their service. |

Since there is often speculation & opinions about the durability of the 500's PLASTIC TRIGGER GUARD/HOUSING, could buyers of these guns please let us know the condition of this item on the guns they receive.
Whether they are all good or all bad or somewhere in between, it would do a lot to settle that debate, given the apparent overall condition and age of these guns. Thanks and have fun bringing you new acquisitions back to life |

Strangely, the more I look at the pics, the more I regret not buying. They are ugly, that is for sure but so ugly they're cool...in a Road Warrior sort of way
IF I had one (and I am not trying to tell anybody what they should do) I think I would give it a good cleaning to remove the shit, replace any broken parts, maybe a very light refinish on the wood and then lube it up properly. Not anything more. As I said, I can envision Mad Max wondering through the wastelands of the "pocky-lips" with one of these ETA- Not a 500 but some similar pump-action goodness from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome The shotgun is a High Standard model K-100 according to imfdb BTW- If you are looking for a rabbit hole to go down, start looking at movie/TV guns on imfdb. The Miami Vice pages are simply hardcore pornography |

I have recently worked on two 500s. One was from 1968 and the other 1973.
Neither had broken tabs and the one that had a broken part had a broken cross pin. While the use and abuse they took doesn't compare to these 500s, fragile they are not. |

Every one of them I've seen broken when I was able to talk to the person who broke it was reassembling it and didn't know what they were doing. Rather than carefully wiggle it in they seem to put the nose in and whack it with the heel of their hand. I suspect that is the majority of the cases because the rounded part behind the trigger guard that indexes with the corresponding groove in the stock makes the fit sort of tight. Remove the stock and they drop right in. View Quote |

I got my firing pin and bolt all slicked up and working.
Also cleaned the trigger pack up and lubed it, seems to function okay. I cleaned the mag tune and thought I would put some cold blue on it, cant find my brand new tube of cold blue. Tore the house up looking for it. Gotta get ready for work tonight. |
|
Some other guys should be getting these in. I have a Buttpad and screws due in Friday. Ordered a new mag spring and safety button.
|
|
Wow. Those are rough. Would be great for people who enjoy restoration work.
