Anyone had any luck using powders other than IMR 4895, H4895, or IMR 4064 with a 150/155 grain bullet. I'm well aware of the whole port pressure issue, just can't find any of the usual go to powders.

For the .30-06 try 46.0 grains of Benchmark and the 150 grain bullet.

Or you use 46 grains of IMR 3031 with a 150 grain bullet.

Or 48.0 grains of Varget.  Or 47.0 grains of W-748.

Google Master Po loads or NJ Highpower.

The old master Po site I think is gone but there are copies and quotes of the loads.

RL15 is one I would look at if you had access

Pick any powder from 3031 to varget/H380 and any bullet from 110-220.   Thats all you need to know.

Used IMR4895 for many years.

A few years back I tried some TAC with Hornady 150 grain FMJBTs.  Perfectly happy with it.  I will use TAC in the future when I get back to loading .30-06 for the M1 Garand and will try it for the M1A, too.

Beautiful powder measure metering vs. many other suitable powders.

This.
Be advised that Varget tracks 4064 pretty closely in Service Rifle load data.

I've been using IMR 4166 lately, but realistically, there are lots of powders that are suitable.

Traditionally, it was supposed to be 3031 to 4064 in burn rate.  I've used as fast as IMR 8208 and as slow as CFE223.

Deviating to faster burn rate is safer on the op rod than deviating to slower.

I’ve used a bunch of 8208 in several Garands with 150 fmjs.

Of the ball powders, W748 is the one to use in the 30-06 Garand and it works best with 150 -155 grain bullets, but can work for 168 grain bullets.

Heavier bullets not recommended with it.

Several manuals recommend 48.0 grains with a 150 grain bullet for the Garand.

This is fairly mild load.

50.0 grains is about max.

49.0 grains is fairly accurate and works the action and gives just under 2800 fps, or around 2790 fps, close to factory military ammo.

50.0 grains is getting up there and gives around 2820 fps, a bit warmer than factory ammo in velocity, but still easy on the gas system.

The Hornady manual gives 48.4 grains as max for a 168 grain (A-Max) bullet.

That sounds like a 150 - 155 grain bullet load though.

There are some mistakes in the Hornady Garand data too.

A friend uses 47.7 grains a 168 grain SMK and it is fairly hot.

I like 47.0 to 47.5 grains with maybe 48.0 max with a 168 grain SMK. (usually 47.0gr.)

In 30-06 with Garand weight bullets, W748 loads similar to IMR-4064 in charge weights.

IMR-4064 will outdo it with 175 grain bullets though.

W748 seems better than BLC2 which can be all over the place.

47.0 grains of H335 can be used with 150 grain bullets, but pressure can climb quickly.

I think Hornady shows a max load of 46.4 grains with a 155 grain A-Max bullet.

I only tried and used H335 when I wanted a one-powder powder for 223, 7.62x39, 308 and 30-06.

Hot magnum primer required.

Much appreciate all the suggestions and information. Now to try to find some powder now that I know what will work.  Thanks!
