Oh, man, I like that a LOT.  That looks great.  I like your choice of colors, but I'm trying to imagine other color combos.  That might be a great pattern to mix in some really funky colors.

I bet she would've known it's "free rein."

I've posted this before, but I've used a similar pattern with crazier colors:

Also nice.  I think I like the smaller "splinters."  On yours, from the receiver back.  The pattern seems too big on the handguards.

I do like the colors!

My first SBR build and first attempt at painting. Thanks to EVERYONE who has posted pictures for me to study. Needs some touch up after I let it sit for a while but I like it.

Did a rattlecan art project this weekend. Seeing all the awesome paint jobs in this thread finally motivated me to paint my M4! I wanted a woodland camo to match the foliage here in PA and I am happy with the finished product.

My first attempt. I used some stencils too. Went for a black multicam. I only did the receiver set and handguard though.

Before with no paint.

After first layer of flat dark forest green.

Finished with some primer gray that I darkened up with some flat black.

.458 SOCOM

I stripped it down, degreased it, gassed it in the oven, another degreasing and gassed again then painted it. I used Aluma-Hyde II coyote and then I oven baked it for 1.5 hours @ 250*.

Work in progress. It’s a little bright for me. Any suggestions on the best way to darken the whole thing?

Great looking sticks, all. I need to paint two hunting ARs and have had some pretty crap results when test-painting on a cardboard box - what is the best technique? Looking for a 3-color job with soft edges, maybe some areas with well-defined brush pattern, etc. that has depth and just disappears. I tried sticks/rope/brush overlay but the paint went right around the smaller stuff and didn't get good results with bigger stuff either.

What are you all doing to get good results?

Really appreciate the advice.

Tape off critical parts (glass, adjustment markings, etc).
Have enough beers until you hit the "fuck it" level.
Spray in light coats, starting with light colors ending in dark.
Don't over-think it.

Can’t find the original picture I took of my deer rifle so this was a few weeks ago at the start of the season. This was my first attemp before painting my more expensive rifles.

Not a huge fan of the entire rifle getting the splinter treatment (i like leaving pins, optics, etc black), but your pattern came out very nice.

Yeah I’m usually with you but it’s a cheap red dot that came on it. It’s getting replaced and I’ll leave that black. I’m going to chop the barrel and leave the can black too.

I am not entirely convinced that a rifle needs or even benefits from mutli-colors and patterns from a rattlecan paint job. Any earthtone will do...anything but black.

I did a brief how-to a while back but this is my Woodland inspired rattle can camo on my 224 Valkyrie.  I’ll do the rail eventually but otherwise I’ll leave the buffer tube, grip, optic, barrel, and can as is

Thanks.
Just make sure it’s clean and krylon sticks just fine.

It rubs off fairly quickly. I’m hoping the clear coat will help it stick a bit longer.  Boys are 3 & 8 so they won’t see Hard use for a bit.
