It's a combination of the Hellcat and Bobcat mods I have previously posted. With one additional modification. I'll take pictures of our outing and hope to have pics of the entire set up next week. I am very pleased with the result. I'm going to call this mod the "Wildcat" since it is significantly different from the Hellcat. It is more a me'nage a' trois of the Hellcat, Bobcat and MOLLE frame. If that dosn't generate some excitement I'm not sure what will Look for my post next week. I'm off for a weekend camping trip with the new Wildcat and 4 tried and true Hellcats. I can't wait for your write-up. I have all the stuff laying around here somewhere and I'm gonna give it a try. |

Down East Mfg Model 1606 Improved MOLLE 2 Airborne Frame http://www.downeastinc.com/images/IMG_1389.JPG stoner63a Thanks for posting the pics of the DE frames. I'll probably use them in my how to. They are a little better than the ones I have. BTW the Wildcat will use the 1606 frame. It is very well suited for the medium alice. I should have the assembly with instructions by the end of the week. I'll do a separate assembly for the 1603 (MOLLE Gen 3/4) in a few weeks. Both frames will accept the Lg and Med alice but each requires a slightly different approach. They both use the same two simple mods to make it work. The first is the Bobcat mod I posted awhile back(I'll link it later) and the second requires clipping the rolled, sewn end off the cinch straps. You then go ahead and perform the fastex buckle add on enhancement and use a second 1" slider at the top of the 1606(and a slightly different place on the 1603) as an anchor point with the cinch strap. I'll have a step by step with plenty of pics and explanations; but many of you versed in alice mods will figure it out by looking at the teaser pics I have posted below. Have fun with the picks; look for the "How to" sometime on friday. |

Thanks for the tip on the airborne frame - I've been lusting after that very frame after seeing one for way too much on ebay from an Australian seller - apparently they are standard issue down there? I love the AUSCAM ALICE packs too - they have three pockets big enough for a 2 Qt canteen. Someday I'd like to get one.
The REAL reason I posted however, was to turn you guys onto a great deal at Sportsmansguide.com - I just got 4 Dutch LBVs for $19.97 - even with shipping it came to just under $30. They look just like the aforementioned 'Medic MOLLE' LBV but look to have the capability to take either ALICE or MOLLE pouches. They are also in a cool pattern which looks a lot like British DPM, or maybe more like the French 'Lizard' pattern which saw so much action in Africa. For around here (northern AZ) it might be perfect, as it has some reddish tones, green and khaki. I will post as soon as I get them, but my camera is down apparently so I likely can't post pics. Gotta get that fixed. The SG product number if anyone is interested is: BXM-173015. I should have enough damn LBVs to outfit a squad after this. Guess I could wear a different one every day of the week... |

This damn forum has cost me over $100 today!
I saw the post on the FLC's. Ordered 5 of them from ghilliesuits. Still need to accessorize them with mag pouches etc..... Saw this post on Alice Gear.....Saw the last post about the Sportsmans Guide Dutch "vests"......bought 4 of those too. BUT, I also happened to notice that they had some Dutch magazine chest pouches......yup, bought several of those. While I was ordering I though what the hell, I can always use some more of those German G3 mag pouches...... I gotta stop coming here! |

I also have the additional parts saved away, so that when my youngest son is large enough; I'll put his together. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v87/caneyforkoutfitters/alle1.jpg I like to call this hybrid the "ALLE Pack". My youngest son misunderstood and calls it the "alley cat" I have now nicknamed it the "Hell Cat" We have taken it on numerous trips to the Smoky's and Appalacian trail; Cave trips; and back country big game hunts; It has performed flawlessly. Everyone who sees this pack is amazed at it's sturdiness; adaptability; bullet proof construction; and overall utility; At a bargain price to boot! It always draws curiousity seekers and comments. The pack consists of alice frame; medium alice ruck; molle shoulder straps; molle moulded kidney belt; and molle sleep system carrier. NO MODIFICATIONS ARE NEEDED TO ASSEMBLE. Once assembled you have a medium capacity expedition pack; completely unitized(packed items won't shift); with top and bottom access. The pack has roughly 3500-4000 cubic inches of carrying capacity(3500 by dimensional calculations but closer to 4000 of actual capacity). Capacity can be expanded by either using a large ruck or adding molle sustainment pouches to one or both sides. That would potentially increase capacity up to 8000 cubic inches. The 5 packs that I own have cost me less than $250 combined. You have to shop around; but this pack can be easily assembled for less than $50. We'll be taking them on a cave trip this weekend; so when I return next week I'll put together a "how to" thread on it's assembly. II just ordered the woodland alice pack and will build one of these. This is an amzing thread! Thanks for all the info |

I have a medium ALICE pack w/frame in woodland, just needed to order the MOLLE straps, belt, and sleep carrier. I was impatient in my ordering, but found a site that has the straps, frame, and belt for $35. On another site I found the sleep carrier for $5. I'll be converting my pack to a Hellcat as soon as my parts get here!
Outstanding thread! |

Yeah, I've got a couple in med. wt. nylon pack-cloth, one in Olive Green, the other in Woodland. Bought from Brigade QM long ago, so it's entirely possible that they are repros, and possibly not terribly exact repros, at that. Kinda tough to find info/pix on 'em. Possibly Osprey or another book publisher has some sort of book out on the Contras–– and their weapons/equipment–– by now. Historical interest aside, they are rather small and quite simple in construction, being a single compartment with largish top-flap, secured by fastex QD buckles. Since cold weather gear was not usually needed in Nicaragua, the pack would be OK for the essentials, like food, mosquito net, hammock, and so forth. The contras traveled pretty light, and the capacity of the pack reflects that. As a practical matter, any of the modern GI MOLLE assault packs currently available (basic as they are) are light years ahead of the Contra packs. |

A side note on my Wildcat above. The mod worked great but I havn't posted the full instructions yet. I was notified that Down East Inc. has come out w/an improved version of the 1606 frame. It is Alice compatible. They dubb it the 1606AC. The old frame was too wide at the top to slip the ALICE ruck over. You either had to cut the wings down or use the bobcat mod as pictured above to make it work. I spoke w/ DE about a year ago and they were very interested in how they could make the 1606 compatible w the ALICE. I gave them my suggestions; I measured the 1606 and told them what width at the top would be needed. The 1606 was so close in it's first version that I hated to take a saw to it just to lose about an inch on either side. They asked for pics and I sent a couple. Never heard back from them, but it appears they did make some changes. I'll be contacting them tomorrow to see if I can get my hands on the new frame. Once I put a ALICE on it I'll post it and include the mods I made to make it work for the older 1606. In the mean time here are some pics and descriptions that will show the slight, but significant differences between the two. The 1606 frame makes these mods noticebly lighter, my wife loves hers. I'm staying with the Hellcat; but one of my son's may switch frames if I can get them to come down a bit in price($36 + s/h). The only down side I see using the 1606 is you can only adjust for a couple of inches of torso length. The Hellcat has almost 6 inches of available adjustment compared to 2 inches at best w/ the 1606.
Old 1606; the top of the frame is noticeably wider than the AC version Down East Inc. |

MOLLE by design was meant to be utilized w/ ALICE gear so the armed services could transition easily from one system to the other. The many posts showing/discussing modified ALICE gear just demonstrates the versatility of the system and that it is not obsolete by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, with some creativity, ALICE can be made to perform as well or better than current gear(IMHO). ALICE will accept most MOLLE but the reverse can't be said or done very easily w/ MOLLE gear. Raf & TimJ Thanks for the kind words. |

Posted in another thread, and submitted for your consideration:
FYI, the ALICE packframe was initially issued with two adjustable "Cargo Straps", and an aluminum clip-on "Cargo Shelf". The shelf clipped onto the horizontal cross-members of the frame, and allowed rigid objects like a 5-gal fuel can or up to 4 ammo cans to be carried when tied-down with appropriate cargo straps. The ALICE frame was intended for uses in addition to carrying packs; might want to give that a little thought. These frames, hopefully upgraded with TT or the more desirable MOLLE waistbelt and shoulder-straps, are very useful for a LOT of uses besides carrying ALICE packs. The poster above, (in other thread) who toted a deer stand, has illustrated this, but I figure he might have found things a bit easier if he had a cargo shelf handy. Let's put it this way: I can carry 1 5-gal fuel can with 1 cargo shelf and 1 cargo strap. I can carry 4 50-cal ammo boxes with one cargo shelf and two cargo straps. Without the shelf, I would have to use I dunno how many straps, and don't forget that the GI cargo straps will take a LOT more stress than either Mil or civvy Fastex-buckled straps, on account of their using steel hardware as opposed to plastic. I have all this stuff, and use what is appropriate. A sometimes incredibly useful accessory, the cargo shelf is not too hard to find. Usually cheap, as in a few bucks. Be advised that the older plywood packboard, and the Vietnam era packframe also had similar, but not identical clip-on shelves, so make certain of what you buy. FWIW, My plywood packframe came with 2 shelves, and my Viet aluminum framed pack has an appropriate one as well. All my ALICE packs have a shelf and a few GI QD cargo straps stored in them, as well as come civvy QD straps. The link below shows a good diagram of the ALICE shelf. About halfway down, on the right. If what you're buying doesn't look identical, beware. Alice shelves were usually originally black, Viet and plywood shelves IIRC originally OG or OD, respectively. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALICE_pack |

Thats a pretty good deal but I meant bulk shock cord tho. I found some, Teh powah of Google. Just a note, Their is a reason I only cut half of the flap. I find that cutting only half of the flap aids in retention. (When it's not folded behind the pouch.) When I go prone or if something hits the pouch just right the mags will "toaster" up. With half of the flap still there it will catch & keep it in place. The weight of the clip seems to keep the flap down after you open it. |

Great info in this thread. Got me motivated to actually buy a pack instead of lusting after Kifaru or similar that I can't really afford right now.
I have acquired everything for a Hellcat except the medium alice on ebay...everything has been used, but authentic and in good condition. I'm still looking for a good deal on the pack. This seller has several unissued packs for sale, but they look "off" to me. Also the NSN listed seems to be wrong. Can anyone chime in on whether these look like cheap chinese junk? eBay Alice pack |

This seller has several unissued packs for sale, but they look "off" to me. Also the NSN listed seems to be wrong. Can anyone chime in on whether these look like cheap chinese junk? eBay Alice pack Dude, why not buy one from a fellow Arfcommer Here? |

Can anyone chime in on whether these look like cheap chinese junk? eBay Alice pack It's the real deal. It's a "radio case" a specialty med ALICE w/ a velcro flap on the right side of the larger top flap to allow the antennae of the squad radio to protrude; It will also have a larger radio pouch than the standard ALICE ruck. The USMC still issue this radio case; not completely sure about the AB. The USMC differs from the AB case in that the foam "yoke" extends the entire length of the pack. I have the USMC version. I'll try to post pics later today showing the differences. This is a unique find; and IMO they tend to be built a little stronger. I wouldn't pass on it. I use the flap and larger pouch to put my hydration system in; allowing the drink tube to come out the top of the pack. If you look at the front and rear enlarged pics of the ebay post you can make out the slit or flap. The rear view will show a line of extra stitching on the right top. Looking at the front view you can just make out the flap/slit on the top left of the pic. An FYI. The USMC is currently the only branch that still issues the med ALICE in large numbers for their recruits at boot camp. Of the hundreds I have handled over the last few years, both new and used, none have had NSN numbers anywhere on the pack. The specialty radio cases are the only ones I have found that still have the NSN numbers printed under the large flap. I'm not sure as to why; maybe to ensure they are readily identified and issued to the proper personel; preventing them for being mistaken for a regular ruck? If anyone has insight I'm all ears edited for incoherency |

It's a variant new to me, and one I haven't handled. If someone is buying one, and wants to get me one also , I'll pay them the $6.50 plus all shipping and handling req'd to get it to me, plus a little bit for your trouble. Just chime in here. At any rate, the USMC is well-known for having Corps-specific variants of equipment, going back a long ways. It does not surprise me to learn of an ALICE pack made to Corps specs. In the past, the Corps was usually the last one in the supply chain, and budgets were always tight. Different/old/innovative/inexpensive gear all got considered for the Corps. |
