One of my first 77gr loads was using exactly that with a SMK.  I dont have my load data handy, but I just started low and worked up.

I never got the accuracy potential I was looking for with TAC, and switched to Varget, and was much happier.  If I was mass-loading in a progressive for "match" ammo, and wanted a powder that metered better in the dillon, I'd likely switch back to TAC after playing with some other newer powders that were not available back then.

Another vote for Varget.  I do 24.5 grains with a 77 smk and find it to be amazingly accurate.

I used to use RL-15, then I switched to TAC, not looking back. TAC meters like water as they say. I have gotten better accuracy as well from it in my match rifle.  I forget the exact load,  but around 24 grains (work up in your rifle, be safe).  I get one hole groups at 100 with my rifle using TAC and 77 grain pills (same with 69 gr too, but different load).  Varget is good, don’t get me wrong, But it is an extruded powder and meters like crap.

I’m interested in this, I have been using TAC mainly with my stock of 62gr Hdy BTHP.  Then using 8208 or Varget with 77gr... also through my 18” WOA and with great results.

But if I can simplify things I can buy a crap ton of TAC and it would cover most of my 223 needs.  I only load rifle on the single stage so i am less conserved with metering.

I used 23.5 to 24 gr of TAC with 77 gr SMK in 18 inch WOA barrels.  Good accuracy.

For the 77s, TAC seems to do better with higher charges. There is 5.56 load data out there for it with charges above 24 gr. But they are stout loads.

Work up carefully. You may find that you get pressure signs right as the groups tighten up.

My go-to 77 gr load is 24 gr TAC behind the Nosler 77 HPBT bullet with a Tula SRM, CCI 450 or CCI 41 primer with an OAL of 2.255-2.260.  I only shoot them in a 5.56 or Wilde chamber.  Velocity 2728 fps in my WOA 18" barrel and MOA or better.

John Holliger - White Oak Armament warns against using Winchester small rifle primers, you'll be fine provided you don't load them too hot.

Varget, RE-15, VihtaVuori N140 and IMR-8208-XBR are all top picks for accuracy. Because of the nature of the current market everyone has to use what they have available.

My rifle likes 24 gr. of Varget the best with a 77 SMK.

I get better accuracy with Varget but use TAC a lot more.  My recipe uses 23.5 gr, WSR primer and a 75 gr HPBT-M bullet from Hornady.

I find that Small rifle magnum primers hold the pressures better when you hot rod 77s. I have a Colt bar 1/7 20in barreled rifle. I regularly shoot loads of Tac north of 24.5. I get 2750 and shoot them to 800 pretty regularly. You have to test loads for your rifle. Win small rifle primers are super flat at these pressures. CCI 450s hold it good

My BCM 18” loves 77g SMK being pushed by 23.5g of TAC in LC brass and Wolf SRM primers (that I stacked deep back in 09).

Tac is a great powder and works well with 77 gr SMK's, but I use 8208XBR in my 18 inch spr barrel.

I use 24.2 of TAC with a 41 primer and a 77gr SMK with cannelure. 2.25" oal

I need to chrono it but no pressure signs.

I just did 1K of 55gr with TAC and am starting on 2K of 62gr with TAC. (all with 25.4 gr)

I haven't joined the 77gr master race, as of yet.

I just ran out of Tula primers, so using CCI 41 now.

Rifle: MK12 Mod 1, 18" barrel, 5.56 chamber.
Load: 77gr Nosler HPBT CC, tula primers, LC mixed brass, 23.4 gr TAC.
Average Velocity: 2579 fps
Best group: 0.402"
Average group: < 1 MOA

YMMV...

I've had very good luck with 55gr flat base bullets with TAC, < 1 MOA. Can't get Nosler 60gr ballistic tips to group worth shit though. Like > 3" groups. Want to work on the 62 gr hpbt next.

I agree. I run noslers but they like the 5.56 pressure load data.

Use RL15 and Varget myself.

I find RL15 to be a better powder.

I'm partial to 8208xbr for 77gr loads although the velocity is a bit lower than some other powders. 8208xbr, LC brass matched by headstamp and sorted for consistency, CCI450s and a 77gr TMK produce stellar results for my needs. Work up carefully, accuracy tightened up right at book max but the rifle preferred a bit more. As always, I do not advocate coloring outside the lines without knowledge and testing.

YMMV.
I think any of the powders mentioned above are good choices, simply chose what I did based on temp stability as this load is used for coyotes in the winter and long range sometimes in hot temps.

A little late to the party but another powder that pushes 77gr nice is aa2520.
I've got a 18" that'll throw 10 of them at .491" with an avg fps of 2592. No pressure signs, etc. with 24gr.I never even tried going any further with testing but if i did it'd be in .1 increments. This same load shoots dang near as good in all my 16" and 11.5".

Re15, TAC, and AA2520 have all served me well using 77 SMK's.

I’m get good results from 8208. Tac didn’t give me the fps I was looking for. I have also used 75gr bthp with h4895 out to 900yrds in a woa barrel.

Did tou try 5.56 loadings? I got 2,579 from 223 loading data without being maxed out.

For long range, I get can get the 75 Hornady up to 3,100 fps using 24.5 gr of TAC.  Of course, I have a secret weapon - a longer barrel.

In that barrel, the lower pressure load of 23.5 gr yields 2,900 fps.

If ya wants to go long, ya gots ta get the proper barrel.  :-)

Came here to suggest this very load.  I have switched to Federal GM205MAR lrimers.  These are hard cup match primers intended for AR rifles.

H4895 meters poorly, but makes up for it in superb accuracy with the 77 SMK and Berger 77 OTM.

As you can see, this is a very popular combination. Excellent accuracy our of all my 1x8 in twist and 1x7 twist  barrels,

Shoots ok in my old 1x9 inch bushmaster AR also !!
