I have always been infatuated with this caliber and I finally have the means to have a custom rifle built.  I was looking at a modern Winchester 1886 for a donor rifle, and have Turnbull restorations do the caliber conversion.  Before I bite the bullet I was wondering if anyone here has one, or has shot one.  I am curious about the recoil with smokeless powder, seams pretty crazy to me that you can achieve 6000 ft lbs of muzzle energy out of a lever gun.  Also reloading information as well, I was referred to load data.com buy Turnbull but I do not want to pay the $35 subscription fee until I am in a position to actually reload.  Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

6000ft/lbs?!!!  You are not sticking with traditional loads are you?  I don't think you want to experience 6000ft/lbs out of an 1886.  The stock shape will make it a one shot and done gun.  Are you sure your going to get 6000ft/lbs?  That's a 350 grain bullet at 2800 fps or a 450 grain bullet at 2450 fps.

I'm curious how this will turn out? I have been looking at this cartridge off and on for years. I just can't bring myself to jump into it yet... I think it would be a blast to hunt with. But by the time you send it to Turnbull it's going to be such a work of art it would be mighty hard to carry it into the brush here.

I dont have the load data to prove that, but I have read multiple articles making that claim. That is one of the things I really want to find out. I don't have intentions on loading that hot unless i were to go on a dangerous game hunt.

And I told turnbull I would want just a caliber conversion nothing more.  I don't even like carrying my JM out in the woods, I would have a hard time carrying one of those pieces .

I found a video making the same 6000lb-ft claim but with light-ish bullets for caliber. I think the presenter claimed to have gotten 2400fps+ with a 450gr bullet. I kind of wonder how long the wrist of the stock can take that level of recoil.

I had several originals when I lived in MT. I found the recoil to be very manageable but I always shot mine offhand, Shooting from the bench with the crescent butt will make a believer out of you...If you have a choice, try to get the carbine style buttplate. I'm not sure if they are still operating but Z-Hat Custom out of Wyoming used to do conversions like this. Original 50-110 and 50EX rifles are stratospheric right now in prices...

6000 ft-lbs is more energy than a .458 Lott or .500 Nitro Express.

My guess is that energy level would have to be with a 300 gr bullet in a .50-110 1886.

2 world records with a 50-110 wcf in the 1886 Winchester

This guy does it with what he says is a 540gr bullet. Pretty cool.

Yea the little bit of info I have found seams really impressive.  I am thinking if going with the straight stock, it just depends on what I can find.  I was also curious about the neck of the stock holding up, but from what I have seen so far there appears to be no issues mentioned. I have had some communication back and fourth with Turnbull and an 18 to 20 inch barrel seems to be the recommended barrel length.   So now the quest for a donor gun begins
