Howdy all

Just picked up a 1895 Marlin Guide gun in 45-70.  Looking for a load using 300 grain Extreme bullets.  Will not be used for hunting, just plinking.

I use 2400 and 3031 you can also look up some loads on any number of web sites

My 2400 load is used for hunting and plinking by reducing it some, been using it for 25yrs and has accounted for all kinds of critters.

45/70 is a wonderful cartridge from mild to wild!!!

I use AA 5744 and with 405gr lead boolets I run 37 grains of powder. Its not a hot load, but it still kicks like any 45/70. I also load with Hodge 4198 and you can get load data from their web site.

Reloading is the only way to go with a 45/70. Enjoy your guide gun.

I use trail boss for my plinking 45/70 loads using berry bullets.

Unique and TB are my go-to powders for both plinking and hunting.

Oh, hello.

Most of the plinking loads I see use 400gr or higher. (Both factory cartridges and guys I've shot with.)

Check out Here

The trapdoor loads are fun as hell and you could shoot all day. Lever loads a bit heavier

I use a 350g cast bullet over unique powder of various charges. I'm still working on the load.

I'm still working up loads for my new (to me) guide gun. Here's some info if you want to load them pretty hot: http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle

Definitely work up slowly with that data. It's over the max of what my reloading manuals show. Last weekend I worked on a 300gr bullet load with IMR 4198. H's data shows a max of 57.8 grains, but when I got up to 55, cases were starting to stick lightly in the chamber. I don't think you should go any hotter.

I think I'll settle on 54 grains for my 300 gr load. About 2200 fps through the guide gun. I think I'll try H4198 next.

H4198 is excellent powder for 45-70 300/350 grain loads, and am also extremely wary over Hodgens published max loads for 45-70 levers.

48.0 gns H4198 under a 300 jsp in Win brass gets me about 1850 fps from guide gun with excellent accuracy.  This is milder load that replicates most standard factory 300 grain loads.

47.0 gns H4198 under Hdy 350 jrn in Win brass got about 1830 fps from guide gun and excellent accuracy.   about as much recoil in light rifle I can take, occasionally.

If using starline brass, reduce powder charge for same velocities.  Using Fed 210 primers.

My usual .45-70 plinking load was 12 grains of Unique behind a 405 gr cast bullet.  It got around 1100 fps.  Fun to shoot and not too expensive to load.  Usual disclaimers apply.

I tried out a similar load today: 14 gr of Unique behind 405gr hard cast. Lots of fun! Didn't chrono, but expect around 1200 fps. Unique really is a wonderful powder!  POI at 50 yards was exactly the same as my 350gr Interlock @ 2100fps.

I load homecast 405's over 4064. Don't have my notes handy but I load slightly above starting charge. Works well in my Marlin and in a 12" Contender. Shot a buck with it last month and it died fast so I'm happy with it. With a cheap supply of lead, casting makes the round CHEAP-only slightly over the price of CCI Stinger .22LR for 50(last time I did the math it was $8/50 vs $9.50/50 at what I paid for my lead).
Me, the rifle and a dead deer.

Are you using gas checks? If not, do you experience leading?

No gas checks, I use the Lee 405 grain mold and water quenched wheel weights with liquid alox lube. I get some minor smearing in the bore, but it cleans out easily with a brush and CLP.

ETA-if I decide to load anything hotter I'll gas check them. Considering my starting loads hit where I want them to and kill deer well, I don't have a lot of need to play with hotter loads-especially in the pistol, it's a handful as it is.
