Got my second 853 from the CMP, a belated retirement gift to myself. Cleaned and refinished the stock, just finished sighting in . Now for the rain to stop. These 853s are so accurate I'm going to try some bug busting this summer. A piece of cardboard,a few drops of honey and wait....

For more fun, stretch it out to 25 yards.  You will need quite a bit of elevation, but the irons are good enough to use the 10 meter rifle target at that distance. I know from experience that my FWB 300s is capable of holding the 8 ring, and mostly the nine ring at 25 yards.

Sad but true. The CMP isn't what it was 10 years ago.

I hang a soda can on a stick and blast away at 25-30 yards with one.  So much fun.

Care to elaborate? I’m genuinely curious, are their grading standards not being followed? I’ve only ordered ammo and a correct grade from them several years ago so I’m out of the loop.

Neat rifle OP, what is the typical range they compete with these at?

What does CMP get for these?

Didn't they cost about $80 new in the 1990s? Or was that the 753?

Nice! Clean the bore and oil the felt wiper and you're ready to go.They seem to come dry as a bone.

My bore is spotless! The wipe
was a little dry   . I used this type of rifle all through high school. Ours were not as nice as the one I got . I suspect it was not used much. Came with new front and rears, New sling as well
