Like the first poster stated, you can swap out most things on the lower like aftermarket triggers, mag release, safety, grip, etc. The upper not so much.

Binary in mine, runs great.  Of all the guns I have but the binary in, this one best simulates full auto.

buy or build a dedicated 22lr would be my suggestion vs buying a whole new rifle.

m&p is great, regret selling mine but it's not the same as a dedicated upper set up from a weight, balance, training perspective imho

Right to Bear offers a lot of stuff to build with now.  I am going to eventually

My 15-22 works great though

I cobbled together my AR.22 from a box of spare/take-off  parts I had and a CMMG conversion bolt. This was before the S&W M&P15-22 was a thing. If I was doing it today, I would just buy the M&P.

Is the M&P15-22 still banned from Appleseed?

ETA- I used a .223 chambered Bushmaster 14.5” barrel with a pinned Mini Y-comp (). With a 1:9 twist, it accurate enough with .22LR. It really likes the 40gr. CCI “AR22” load.

I have been very happy with the functionality and performance of my 15/22.
I definitely enjoy shooting it more than the multiple Ruger 10/22’s I have had in the past.
For what it is and was designed for dropping a fancy trigger in it makes little sense for me.

I have a NiB standard mil-spec style trigger in mine.  I had a LaRue MBT trigger in it but moved it to another rifle and dropped in the nickel boron on in.

I've had several triggers in mine, currently has a bfs3.

I do suggest you buy the cmmg anti-wall pins that are designed for the 15-22.  The lower is slightly wider than normal and regular pins aren't the best fit.
