I found a basic 1981 10-22 today for $100.00. Walnut stock, metal trigger group. I swore I'd not buy any more 10-22s but I'm weak.

While I like the old school walnut stock well enough the darn gun weighed in at 7.3# and I wanted to try to get the weight down to around 5.5# w/scope but still maintain the 18.5" barrel and a full length stock. I have plenty of threaded barreled 10-22s of different flavors/lengths and just wanted a more or less OEM one to tool around on my property with.

I have a walnut deluxe stock but it weighed more than the one that was on it.

Then I remembered I had bought a hardwood kinda-sorta deluxe stock at the flea market for $20.00 but it was much thinner and 1/3 lighter so I used it after installing sling swivels. At least it has the virtue of a regular butt-plate rather than the concave one of the old school stock.

I replaced the steel rings and installed low aluminum rings on a new base to get the scope low on the receiver. It had the old tip-off only base on it. The scope is a 80s vintage Japan-made Bushnell 1.5 - 4.5 .22 Sharpshooter, nice and clear.

I got it down to 5.6# so I'm pleased.

Of course it still has the Ruger 8-9# crap trigger pull but I ordered a target hammer kit for it.

Love my older 10/22s. Have a 1971 that my mom had (and accidentally drilled a hole in the stock) and an early 80s that was my Dad’s that will never leave my collection.

Think I currently own 6

FWIW, I paid $84.50 plus sales tax in 1982 for a new 1982 10/22 that I have.  I know that I paid $84.50 because I've still got the box with the price sticker on it.  Thousands of rounds and still working great.  Only current upgrades are scope on top, extended mag release, buffer made from a 1/4" poly bolt, and adjustable stock for smaller stature shooters.  It's always been reliable, even with cheap ammo.

Enjoy many safe and happy times with your find.

Nice find OP.  I still have my Ruger 10/22 that I bought new in 81' from Woolworths.  It was my first firearm and looks just like yours.  Have a Weaver 4x mounted on top IIRC.
