Which one do you prefer and why?

Cant really decide which one I want for sure. I have a pistol build Im planning on rebarreling into a rifle. It is a para gun.

Im leaning 16" but I thought I would ask our resident FAL guys before jumping.

I prefer the 436mm (17.165") length for the reasons @bigstick61 stated here in your other thread.
I previously had a 16" barrel, but the 1.165" difference just made it better for me.

I'm also a big fan of NBC handguards.

This, in accordance with the parlance learned on FALfiles.

Unfortunately they are more difficult to source than bipod-cut handguards.

This is a (refinished) Belgian 50.63 Para with 436mm barrel.

I recently had a post ban imbel with a non-threaded cue-stick barrel recently cut back and rethreaded to 17-3/8".

I mocked up the image below to see how 18" vs. 17" vs. 16" looked and decided to split the difference between 18 and 16.  If 17" isn't an option I would probably go for 16", especially if it was running a para stock.

I’d do 18.

16 will run but it has drawbacks.

17" on my PARAs and 18" on my Congos

I have a 16". Looks just like the bottom one, but a para. It works fine, and isn't obnoxious like people were saying in the other thread.

Rolled with a 16"

Just put in a order for the locking shoulder

I'd do an 18" with long gas system, longer time for propellant to burn completely and easier to tune. Had a 16" FAL and it was loud as hell, kicked hard (short gas system) and powder was not completely burned judging by the huge fireball

I had DSA cut down my ban era fixed stock FAL to 16” back in 04’ and it’s been 100%. It’s still a big bitch so you made the right call

I have the DSA 16" Para Carbine.  According to my chronograph, I only loose about 30-40 FPS over my
18" barreled Congo version with the same ammo on the same day.  For the increased compactness, and
weight savings, (the DSA para has the aluminum lower), I'll take the 16" rifle.

Although it is not going to be as light and handy as a 16" barreled carbine AR, as it is still a full-powered battle
rifle, but it will be noticeably lighter and handier than a full-sized FAL.

Bump for a good thread.

My kid has an 18" DSA Para Congo on order.

We both had AR-10s with the 16" barrels and I felt like they were just too
short for .308.

I had a FAL Para with an 18" barrel previously and felt like that was the best balance between compactness
and performance.

16” para fal is such a handy carbine length.

I actually prefer a 21" barrel on a Para, but 18/17.3" would be my second choice. A little less blast and more dwell time for (potentially) greater reliability.
