I'd have to guess when the gun was re-arsenaled they overtorqued that barrel way too much. Add a little corrosion in threads and a few decades to rot and that's what you get.

There's a reason I testfire every "new" surplus rifle with a 3' string and a bunch of floormats on top of the receiver. 5 of the hottest rounds you can find, examine the brass carefully, and call it good.

I've had a couple Mosin's with really badly rotted chambers that could easily fail like yours. That's why using a brass cartridge is key. The spent case will show any irregular rot where the brass flows into the voids. It won't show a crack though.

Just weld it up, it'll be fine!

HA HA.  I'M REALLY THINKING OF HOLDING ON TO THE RIFLE (WHAT IS LEFT) SO I CAN SEND IT TO THE SMITHSONIAN OR THE HERMITAGE!

1st time I have ever seen a failed Mosin.  I have to wonder if it is related to the end of the barrel threads , maybe a machining issue back in 32 , Glad you were not hurt

The barrel was replaced and overtorqued. Granted it took a few decades to fail.

Everything has a finite life, even Mosins. Yes, I know that's hard to believe but everything will fail eventually...

You sure about that?  The barrel has a 32 date and the receiver has a 33 date.  I would say it's original.

+1. The odds against a '32 barrel being a replacement on that receiver are astronomical.

The hex receivers are strong. I had a Finn M-28 barreled receiver years ago, some garage smith twisted it trying to remove the barrel (why)? But I was able to straighten it out and shoot it. The steel on those shouldn't be that brittle. The crack looks very old to me. It is discolored. Glad you weren't hurt! I would look for another receiver, or part it out?

Glad you weren't hurt. I wonder if the reciever was cracked in very cold weather way back when. We all know how cold it got during WWII in Russia. Maybe it was buried in the snow and run over by a Tiger tank outside of Stalingrad.....

I can only hope this was used by Vladimir when he was fighting Don Ed on the russian steppe!   I'll never know!

Freezing could be one explanation.  Or, something else over the gun's long history.

Remember, many of these guns not only saw action, they literally went through one or more war zones.

Maybe that gun was too close to an explosion?  Whole lot of HE was used in the wars - so I do not think it is far-fetched to imagine some Mosins being exposed to a explosion.

Ultimately, we will probably never know.

You can see from the left side of the cracking that the crack is very old from the darkness of it. Looks like when it was arsenaled, bluing salts actually got in there and blued inside the crack.

Is the magwell matched to the gun or lined out and reserialized?

all matchy

Well..finally sent the rifle back to AIM (was a little miscommunication on getting me a box and label).  AIM was awesome the entire time.   Gave me a full refunrd (I chose store credit like any good ARFCOM member) within a day of me reporting the incident.

Will report back if I hear anything from AIM (if they hear from importer, etc..).
