Current training is that RH folks have the bolt handle on the left side, so folks that like to hold the front of the mag well have issues

I have used the magwell grip on mine with the charging hanndle on the left side, and I didn't have any issues. I simply had to keep in mind that the charging handle was there, so with lots of training you would be able to avoid the charging handle with out any problems. The one time the charging handle did bite was when I had the rifle benchrested and had my left and over top of the rifle, the charging handle knocked my hand out of the way and chambered the next round no problem. Needless to say, it did cause some pain, but it taught me my lesson. |

- Mag changes, mags drop free for quick change?
- Clearing failures, i.e., can they be performed rapidly, with a single hand? - Different optics on it: EOTech, Aimpoint, BUIS. - Stock adjustments/cheek weld with various optics - Shooting it with the stock folded - Different sling attachment points for carrying with 2, 3 point slings - Overall ergonomics?? |

I don't understand why the charging handle reciprocates......seems like a backwards step to me. I've read why and who requested it, but I still think it's a bad idea.

Great for us as its only a shoe string away from having a dog killed lol.

My unit is fielding the SCAR starting next week. This is the full SCAR system (heavy, light, grenade launcher etc.) I want to do a review on it. I haven’t followed its development very closely, so I'm not sure what features or aspects I should give special attention to. I had the opportunity to briefly fire the heavy and light versions a year ago. I was somewhat skeptical going into the shoot, but was favorably impressed in the end. I believe it has evolved somewhat since then, so I’ll have to give it a fresh look. If you’re interested, please give me some input on what you want to see in a review and I'll do my best to provide the info. Thanks If you / your unit is in a position to get issued the SCAR - why are you asking for help on the internet? Asking for guidance on military weapon evaluation on AR15.com. Tell me this is not what our military has turned into. |

Seriously, the OP was just asking what types of things we here would like to know about the SCAR. That way, he'll make sure to give special attention to those areas. |

I suspect they want to be able to clear jams the way they could with Garands and M14s. Stand it up on the stock and stomp the shit out of the charging handle. Just my guess, I could be wildly wrong. |

I'd really love to see someone do that, and then count the plastic pieces afterwards... |

I tried that with an M-60...I broke the handle off, it actually pulled right through the receiver.
I would think that a handle akin to the Israeli FAL charging handle would work. Spring loaded, push it in to lock into the bolt carrier....again, what do I know, I was a leg (on a rope) grunt. I'm curious as to what kind of training they did to transition to the new rifle.

Make sure it will operate inverted.
If you have access to a broken shell extractor see if you can rapidly insert that into the breech without having to completely disassemble the weapon. Take a fired case, deprime it, and put a bullet into the case at the correct COAL. It should not enter into the chamber fully. See if you can extract the stuck case using the extractor or if you have to resort to tools. Inspect the magazines and magazine release mechanism for wear at the end of the test. Disassemble the magazine and put the spring in incorrectly (inverted or backwards) if possible. See if the weapon will function this way. Take the rear sight and count the clicks for windage all the way out until you run out of adjustment range. Click the same number back and see if the group shifts. Inspect the fired brass. Does it dent or deform the brass? Is the firing pin captive or does it float? Attach a tight sling and see if you can get the groups to shift. ETA: If possible see if the rifle will function with lightweight varmint bullet loads (45gr). |

I handled one at the NRA convention and it felt like cheap airsoft crap to me and the stock was difficult to operate. The XCR seems 1000 times more robust. The FN rep was giving a demo and he said the SCAR's barrel has a service life of 30,000 rounds compared to the M4's 2500 round barrel service life. Thats when i walked off. Did you mean to say 25,000 M4 barrel service life? There is no way that a M4 barrel service life is 2,500 rounds...that would be like a couple fire fights. |

Thanks for the input everyone. The review is now posted. great review! |

That was a damn good review, I think. Have you thought about
trying to write for some of the better gun magazines out there? You really should. That was more informative than any articles I've read in recent memory. Good balance of fact and opinion. Thanks for that excellent write-up! |
|
thanks! read the whole thing. It was great you took the time to share this with us.

Thanks for taking the time to write this.
The stripped barrel screw was interesting. I wonder why FN didnt add a Helicoil insert to protect the threads like Robinson does with the XCR. Good review. I've shot the SCAR a couple of times, and I like it quite a lot. I have one on order in fact. It has its quirks, all guns do, but still, there is a lot to like I think. |
|
Great review and thanks for taking the time to share especially with the pics.

Thanks for the review and the pics.
They need to get rid of the plastic parts and the plastic lower and go with aluminum. Gotta love that three tone look too... |
|
Besides the usual ARFcom trolling and faggotry, that was one of the best reviews I've read on this site.
Thanks. |

975 yards, M80 ball, 10 inch CQC barrel and Elcan on an Ivan. I was impressed to say the least.....
Hey OP, you werent the guy doing FA suppressed Mag dumps were you The highlight of my time out there was messing with the guys with Muliticam kit asking them if they played airsoft on the weekends |

Thanks for the review. I have no dog in the hunt and appreciate the objectiveness.

Thanks for your time sharing your experiences with the SCAR. It is exceptional that military end-users give reviews on their latest gear. Here are some things that should be checked out with time:
1. Fixing a rail directly to the barrel was not a good design. Several mag dumps could heat it to the point of melting any accessories bolted to it such as vertical fore-grips or rail covers. Could you check this out when you have a chance? 2. Fasting the receiver rails and barrel to the receiver shell by screws may not be a good idea either. Under repeated hammering, screw holes tend to crack radially outwards. Holes around the barrel retaining screws (at the black ovals in front of the ejection port) should be checked regularly. Supposedly the rivet holes in the M240 receiver will crack with extended use. By the way, are you Army or AF? |
|
Great review...I can already see several points now where that weapon is going to fail, and fail hard. Haven't had the chance to shoot one yet, just handle them, but 10 seconds with rifle in hand and I can see exactly what's going to happen under sustained usage, and it won't be pretty.
If they decide to order them in quantity, I guarantee in ten years down the road people will look back and facepalm at all of the warning signs. |

one of the best reviews I have seen in a long time......... great job...

Fixing a rail directly to the barrel was not a good design. Several mag dumps could heat it to the point of melting any accessories bolted to it such as vertical fore-grips or rail covers. Could you check this out when you have a chance? It does get a little warm. The front end of the rail is not fastened to the barrel though. I don't think my picture shows that very clearly. It is a free floating barrel. A heat shield might be a good addition. 2. Fasting the receiver rails and barrel to the receiver shell by screws may not be a good idea either. By the way, are you Army or AF? Army |

i agree with the plastic parts, im not convinced on it either.

Thanks for review!
What accessories were included in the maintenance kit(the Eagle Industries pouch), besides the Seekonk? |
|
Excellent review impressed with the level of detail. Thank you!

That's the exact same thing that was said about the M16 rifle 50 years ago. I appreciate the review, as it was very informative. Would it make me change my mind about buying one? No, I'd still buy one today if I could find it for MSRP or less. Since mine wouldn't be full-auto, I'd say that it would stand up to anything I'd subject it to. |

Great review and thanks for taking the time to post it!
My two main gripes seem to be the most common: I'm still irritated about fn's choice to go with a reciprocating charging handle. As a 'high thumb' shooter, it worries me. I also don't like the bottom rail attachment to the barrel. The potential heat on accessories is one minor thing, my main concern is whether a good tight shooting sling attached on that rail would adversely affect poi. |
|
Thanks for the Review......
It's one of the best and honest ones I've read on here in a long while..... Keep up the good work, stay safe, and thanks for serving. |
|
Great review. Thanks for going through the trouble of writing it up.
I really want a 7.62 version. |
|
Nice review, thanks.
I want a SCAR badly but I may wait and see what gets changed/upgraded. If the Rangers and Spec-Ops are going to use them in the field for the next few months, we'll know soon how they really hold up. I think the M16 family gets a bad rap from a lot of folks, but it's taking a long time to find an equivalent/better system. |
