	What's the worst that could happen?

If you do on the side, you run the risk of collapsing the tube where the weights have to slide back & forth. Engraving it would not do this. Sharpie will not do this, but will go by-by if it sees the wrong solvent.

They could simply weigh them. Although I have to think anyone who would steal your buffers would be busier shoving them up their ***.
