Well, the 'right' barrel mount came in today so I tossed it on and wow I love the PAQ on here.  Not in love with the surefire situation but it will do for now.  Thanks augee for the pic letting me know there was such a barrel mount!

I'm working on gathering parts for a late 80's - early 90's "scud hunter" carbine, and I've noticed that no one really talks about the Aimpoint 9000sc for a modern stand-in for the older thousand series red dots. Seems to me it would be a solid choice for a hard use clone rifle.

I was just at my LGS sifting through the clearance bin and they had one of these 9000's for $329.  Didn't know if that was a good deal or not but it had a magnifier on the front too.  I imagine it will continue to collect dust in true LGS fashion for years to come lol.

After having no luck finding a 3000 (at the time), that is what I ended up using. I'm content with it, even if not correct.

Would an Aimpoint 5000 XD 2x be clone correct or just the 5000?

ETA-
Video is relevant to this thread.

Also has me thinking about giving my barrel the old chop chop.

Or stop waffling and just buy the AEM....decisions are needed.

In my opinion go for it; that was the optic I had planned to purchase for my clone and would definitely fit the bill for your purposes. It has the upgraded circuitry, stronger adjustment knobs, and some what stronger rotary switch. As far as looks it’s good to go for that 3-5000 footprint.

Only reason I didn’t spring for it is because I had my M2 already in the safe, sitting unused for a few years and was able to put those funds towards the other hard to find items like the M-14 surefire Mount and ARMS 5 slot carry handle mount.

My clone is just that, so a few liberties were taken but I’m happy with how it turned out...you would get no grief from me using that optic.

Edited for spelling.

Anyone got a set of the old 30mm rings for the 5000 lying around? I need a set.
Link Posted: 5/26/2020 1:18:44 AM EDT
[#11]
If I’m not mistaken those old rings you see used are Leupold “Rifleman” series rings.

Not exactly hard to find but not easy either, I saw a few when I was considering the 9000 Aimpoint...hope this helps, Cheers.

Apparently Leupold has discontinued the 30mm Rifleman vertically split rings.

These rings from...Browning...Warne...or...Millet...could probably pass the 10 ft test.

I also have a couple of Fuddy gun shops locally here that may have a set sitting in some god-forsaken corner of the shop. I will buy every set I can and sell them at cost plus shipping to anyone who needs them IF I can find any.

I was lucky to get a 5000 with rings included so any I find I am happy to pass along.

I’ll do the same. I frequent the same type of LGS that have the dusty 90s bin full of weaver type stuff.

I love my 5000 on the 727 but I went to zero it at high noon sun and had a very difficult time seeing the dot compared to the M2 and M4s I zeroed that day too. What’s that usually mean? Lost it’s nitro purge?

Didn't have the patience to CLONE, but I still feel dirty with the A2 lower, castle nut, and 4-position buffer tube.

The only other glaring item, IMHO, is crush washer versus peel washer, but I would say it captures the look and spirit of these weapons way better than most--a lot of replicas I see are weird hybrids of Ranger Regiment, Delta, and Movie-Version guns that don't actually look like anything that was actually used.

I need to finish my Gordon carbine with the light mount.

Did you drill and mount the pic rail yourself?

Found some Surefire m16 Mounts today that have been milled for picatinny rings.

In the past I’ve use the m14 mounts because that’s what I could find NOS and cheap.

This is the first time I’ve seen m16 models in person.

Not my rifle but I have a similar build. If I had to guess it’s a 12.5” barrel and an AEM5 suppressor.

Yes that's an original CompM... I'm trying to use parts that have been sitting in my basement for ever.

Working on a BHD style carbine.  May go with a few newer parts though like a better charging handle, bolt catch, and light mainly. Some for convenience, some because I already have them.

Will have a 12.5" barrel and AEM 5.

The sling had two metal slides, doubled up on each other, so I pulled them apart.
I wrapped one end of the sling through the slots on the stock, then secured that end to itself using one slide.

The ALICE strap didn't have any hardware other than the rectangular wire loop used to quick release from the shoulder pad of the pack, and the quick release bracket used with the lower strap.  The lower strap has one end that's been doubled up on itself and sewn together so it won't go through the quick release.  The other end has a loop sewn into it.  Since I had no other hardware/slides/buckles to work with, I strung the lower strap through the FSB, and then through the loop in the end of the strap to secure it to the gun.

Then, I took the other end of the Carbine sling, and ran it through the loop on the end of the ALICE pack strap, and secured it to itself the same way I did with the stock end, using the other slide.

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/735/22236644490_4a0ab84565_b.jpg

So, I know this is all improvised, so there's no "wrong" way, but since I'd like to set this up similarly to what was used by the rangers in Somalia.

It seems to work well enough.  I can sling it, pull the front strap and tighten it up to carry on my back.  And I can swing it around, pull the quick release, and pull the whole thing out enough to shoulder it (semi-comfortably).

And since I'm essentially improvising my improvising at this point, any opinions are welcome.  Did I get it right?  Am I way off?  Am I missing some piece(s) still?

I recently become dissatisfied with my slings and decided to make a home brew one that includes the USGI silent sling and the alice pack strap. My question is do you need that middle quick release buckle or can you cut it off and just leave the slider and attach the USGI silent sling to it?

Also how long do you think such a sling would last?
