I've got a a couple of rifles in the safe that don't get a lot of time on the range.  I have a golden rod in the safe that is in a climate controlled basement.  Would it be a good idea to spray them with EZ OX or wipe them with some gun oil to keep them free of rust etc?

i would.

ezzox works, but has special application instructions.

CLP works for years

Vaseline works for decades.

I'd go with CLP Breakfree.
SHAKE THE BOTTLE WELL.

It's one of the most effective products at preventing rust, and is an excellent lubricant.
If there's any fouling you missed when cleaning the gun the CLP will soften it and help remove it.

Don't apply a heavy coat.
I use a clean, soft toothbrush with a few drops of CLP to apply a very thin coat.  This gets down into tight areas and the CLP will creep and spread into any areas missed.
The toothbrush also eliminates leaving lint from a patch used to apply the CLP.
Keep the toothbrush clean by cleaning regularly with a solvent that won't attack the plastic brush.

Unlike greases you don't need to even wipe it off before shooting if it's a thin coat.  Just use a rod and patch to wipe out the bore and chamber.

VCI bags or emitters. No oiling necessary. Temperature doesn't effect it, humidity actually makes it work better. Best protection all around IMHO. Been using it for almost a decade, no rust. Allows firearms to be in a ready state too.

Always wipe down every gun with an oily cloth, regardless of how it is kept.

My preferred lube and protectant is Corrosion-X but there are plenty others out there that work great.

This works - and don't touch the metal surfaces after wiping them.

I've had 03's, 03A3's, M1917, etc. in those padded cloth zip up cases, stored in the attic (freezing in the winter, 110F and humid in the summer) for 6 to 8 years and when I took them down they were as nice and rust free as when I wiped them off and put them away.  Plain old 3n1 oil.

I had some guns stored in the attic (same storage method) at my mom and dad's house for over 20 years (father-in-laws hunting guns) and took them down once in all those years to inspect and wipe them down again.  They all looked great, no rust, nice and shiny.  Finally took them down to give them to my sons and nephew (his grandsons) when they got old enough to take care of them and have a place to store them.

In my experience, if you get rust you either touched it (finger tip/palm) or failed to wipe it down well.

I have been using Breakfree Collector since it came out and it seems to have worked fine. But I do keep the guns in a conditioned area not a garage or unfinished basement.

WD40 Specialist corrosion prevention is pretty good at preventing rust. Comes out almost like a grease.
