I have a 11.5 del-ton heavy barrel that has a F marked front sight base on it with a  .750 Gas Block platform. I want to have Bricks xm177 flash hider and spacer installed by John Thomas. My question is should I have John replace the F marked front sight base with a non F marked base with a same .750 gas block platform?  This is part of a xm177 project.,

I guess I could wait and get a 11.5 barrel from Green mountain when they become available.

Wait and go for a pencil barrel. I've done similar builds and I always go back and change to parts that I should've installed the first time. Which is kinda fun now that I think about it, but if you are spending money with Mr. Thomas I'd go for the pencil barrel.

Agreed, if you're going to be paying someone to weld stuff on, I'd get the right one.

Will the Green Mountain 11.5 barrels be lightweight?

The 11.5 barrel will not get you to 16" with Bricks moderator.  Get the 12.7" Brownells barrel and JT will chop it then pin/weld the moderator to keep your rifle at legal length.  Couldn't be any happier with my setup that he did for me.

Bingo! I thought the same thing OP....

11.5” barrel + 4.5” moderator = 16” right? Wrong!

I didn’t compensate for the overlap of the barrel and moderator . This overlap is subtracted off the total length. I returned my 11.5” and bought the 12.7” and had John Thomas work his magic at extremely fair prices.

This is mine with the moderator that John fabricates and sells. Email John, he will get back to you before you know it.

I believe John is on vacation this week so he might or might not be answering emails.

That seems silly... If you're trying to approximate the look of an 11.5" with moderator, why not aim for 16.1" or 16.05"?

If the moderator alone is 4.335" (minimum 3.715" net added length with 0.620" thread length; slightly longer if using grenade ring), the barrel as measured from the boltface needs to have a length greater than 12.285" to be NFA compliant. 12.335" should give a bit of positive clearance to bee sure its over 16"

use the {img} tags, except use "[" instead of "{"

IMHO, That barrel is way too thick to look like an XM-177

It’s got a slow ass twist... so if you only ever plan to shoot 55gr that will work.

I went with a BCM 11.5” enhanced light weight and a Brick extended moderator. I like the BCM because it has the better twist rate. Better twist rate for such a short barrel at least. The only down size is the BCM barrels are pricey.

I ordered the Brownells barrel but I may have to have build another one using the Green Mountain 12.7" barrel when they are available. This retro stuff is killing me.
