Hi Folks

Finally getting parts together to make a nice XM177.
Question is do I go slab side and make it a Son Tay raider, or with the side device that Eugene despised so much and do a SOG/LRRP E2?

I have a feeling, will probably end up with both (maybe one as a E1/SMG and the other a E2) eventually as the repro retro A1 parts shortage eases. But wanted to know which way
you might have gone and why.

thx!

The correct answer is get both!

18Z50…..XM-177E2 is my religion!

... both

But in this day and age, I'd make the one which has all the parts available first, cheapest, easiest to get.  Then start on the second.

I wanted a gun like the SOG guys carried, and I have a million pics of them, so I built an E2.

Got everything myself, always told myself E2 ...now leaning E1.

If you have a line on the optic, go Song-Tay.

Otherwise, E2.

My favorite GAU-5

Why Stoner despises the forward assist was because he believed it was total unnecessary, but the Army felt differently. I been shooting ARs since the late 70s and M-16 in the military and never needed the thing.

Careful, getting into the XM177 series leads to parallel Vietnam era purchases.

I vote XM177E1.  UXB had a beautiful clone in the early days of the Retro Forum. That website in the link is what I used for my early retro builds.

I chose this as well.  I’m just waiting for PSA to make the lowers.

Although the fact that my dad carried in Nam may have influenced it slightly.

I vote E1 as well. I'm in the middle of 607 and E1 builds at the moment and I can't wait.

Well, you can't go wrong at all.

But I have to second what a few wrote: E1.

I always was a big fan of the E2 version that was used by MAC-SOG. But as I grew older the E1 that could be seen with dog handlers, medics or officers in line units got me more and more hooked.

Mine is a late model with full fence lower and Nylon coated stock.

ETA: whatever you do, go with John Thomas for the barrel work. I sent the barrel and parts for my E1 out on Friday, he just shipped them out back to me yesterday so he must've done the work the same day he got it, then shipped it right back out. He did the same thing with my 607 upper.

I am fortunate that the retro bug bit me when many original parts were available at affordable prices.  I don't think I could afford to do this build today just because of how bad stocks have gotten.

Oddly, this carbine has the fewest vintage parts of any retro build I've made.  Just the furniture is genuine, but getting the NDS upper and lower at almost the same time got me a great color match!

I still feel that plunking down the $200 for the SBR stamp is the key to getting an E2 build to look right.  The difference between this and a pin-and-weld moderator is small, but I think people see it even if they don't realize that the small amount of extra barrel is what's throwing them off.

Very nice upper!
Any recommendations on where to find the rear hand guard caps?

I have honestly no idea. John Thomas was able to cut the HGs for me, but all the parts came in a kit from someone in the EE, including the stock from 607Stocks.

Thanks just the same! John Thomas sure does superior work - the hand guards look like a perfect fit.
Anxious to see that upper mated to the lower...

Heatnbeat might be able to do some for you - not sure if he's hanging out here at this time, though.

This fella did an Airsoft LaFrance build  and had a front handguard cap done in metal from a 3D printing place - and someone here (Red McCloud? BigRix?) was doing printed 607 rear caps, if I recall correctly. (Not metal, though.)

Thanks. The talent and ability that some folks have is unfair!
I'll try to look up HeatNBeat - I've seen photos of his excellent work on some 607 stuff - amazing.

I agree about the stamp.
That little bit of extra barrel seems like it would be a subtle difference but It jumps right out at you.

I tried not to cut any corners when I built this one.

As a plus, the same gun makes a decent 733 clone, with a quick change of the stock and muzzle device.

I am in the same boat, I have started to collect the parts for a build.  The answer for me will be whatever parts I can find available to build a complete carbine.

It looks like that will be whatever parts PSA makes available for sale, is what I will be buying.  Nobody else out there seems to have anything

This is basically what I hope to end up with when I am finished. My Carbines will not be SBR though.  M16, M16A1, GAU-5, and an XM177E2
I have them all started and in different stages of completion.

I cheated and just bought both from colt, reissue e2 and gau5. Absolutely love them both, but if i had to choose, I’d choose the e2.

Have one SBR'd retro lower with E1, E2, and a 12.7 KISS upper (just shot the E2 upper today).  Now just need another A1 upper receiver to put together an 11.5 upper with just an A1 flash hider.
