Is it period correct to see an XM16E1 with a 203 on it? I have only seen pics of XM148's on these rifles but I am not sure if there was an overlap?

Here it is later with a sleeve of some sort on it.

Never saw anything like that when I carried a XM16E1.  Could it be two 20 rounders somehow pieced together?

Same here but in Italy 1986.

"Period correct" is a silly term with military weapons. From the day they were made they evolved.

Early contact mag.  That's a great welding job, or however they managed to get them to hold together.

When I first got to my first dive team in 85' I was issued a XM16E1 w/M203.  Don't think I have any pictures however.  Turned it in two years later for a M16A2.  Unit was 1/5th SFGA.

Summer of 1968, Vietnam, we had a Honda 50 that got messed up ( run over by a 2-1/2) and used the front inner tube to mate two 20 round mags together.
Cut the tube into about 4" to 5" long pieces and just slipped them over the mags.
It did around 8 or 10 of them.
It was not pretty, but it worked.
We only used them for a short period, because of the long length got in the way.
I had forgotten about it until I saw this picture.
I wish I had taken a picture of it, but I guess I didn't.

RON
I remember now why they didn't work for us, they collected dust or mud and you had to take them apart to clean, then reinstall the tube and it was not worth the effort.

To be clear, you were wrapping the inner tube around the bottom of two mags you put baseplate to baseplate together, w/ the bottom mag's feedlips hanging down towards the ground?

Or did you build an ersatz 40 round mag out of two 20 round mags?

I don't think this is the staggering of two 20s using a rubber ban.  Look at this picture from the video, you can see the bottom of the base plate.  Also look at the picture I posted earlier with the long mag body with holes in the middle of it.  This appears to be an attempt to make a single extended mag.

The "bumps" under the rubber look to line up with the holes in the other picture showing the holes.

YES>

It was two 20 round mags just butted up together to give you 40 rounds.

When you used the first 20 rounds, you pulled it out and reversed it.

It didn't work out for us. Bad idea.
It was one of those ideas that looked good talking about it, but in practice not so good.
