OK, so who is going to dig deep to buy this for the ultimate clone build?

They have been listing it weekly for about six months with no takers

First time I ever saw it listed. Surprised they haven't used one of the big name auction houses for it.

I know what I am getting if I win the lottery tonight.

That’s a CGL-4 which came before the XM148. So that price is not bad. A XM148 goes for the $10,000-$12000 range so this being NOS and all the extra parts isn’t bad.

Does anyone make a decent inert clone of one?

Asking for a friend.

If I still collected, I would grab it. Will have to get by with a 203 and M79.

It's just a normal XM148. No extra parts, that's how it shipped from Colt. Everything you need to install it on a rifle. It is NOS so, it should command a premium but... $20k is very high in my opinion. It's at the very least, not priced to sell quickly.

Guess I didn't look close enough. That's quite unusual, perhaps the price is worth asking after all. I wonder if it's a commercial or export unit. I've honestly never seen that before.

That's what I think it is.  The XM148 is the U.S. military designation of Colt's slightly modified CGL-4.  After its not so successful field testing in Vietnam,  I'm sure Colt knew there wasn't much future for the XM148 in the Army.  They probably attempted to market it to foreign countries using their commercial/factory model designation, much like they did with M16 variants.

A very interesting piece but past my budget too.

I went through all of my pictures and managed to put together a short serial number list from what few were visible and legible.

00001 XM148
00236 XM148 Cutaway
19579 XM148 Cutaway
23436 XM148
23464 CGL4
23572 XM148
24483 XM148
26743 XM148
35305 XM148
36591 XM148

You can see where this one falls in the group. Not really enough data to make any accurate conclusion but, interesting.
