A local store has one of these on the shelf. This is the 20-inch A4 rifle. Looking it over I noticed that the barrel twist is a 1:9, although Windham also sold 1:7 versions. This would be a range gun/target plinker. Is 1:9 adequate for both 55 and 62 grain ammo? I'm guessing that anything heavier would be kind of iffy.

Yes, 1/9 is fine for 95% of the .223/5.56 ammo out there, including 55/62 gr. It is actually more versatile than 1/7 which was designed with M855 in mind.

1/8 is also fine with M193 or M855 (55gr/62gr).

^this - really more bullet length but a 20" 1/9 will likely accommodate 95.2% of bullets you'd want to use.

Owning both 1/7 & 1/9 I agree with the posters above…
1/9 will serve you perfectly fine.. I’d say it’s slightly more accurate than 1/7 with cheaper non match ammo.

Don’t overthink it and enjoy your AR

ETA: no problem shooting heavier ammo up to 75gr

I'll echo what others have said. 1-9 twist is fine for 55 and 62 grain ammo. It might even shoot the heavier bullets fine too, you will have to try it.

The main reason for the 1-7 twist was not for the m855 62Gr ammo. The 1-7 was required to properly stabilize the longer M856 tracers rounds in certain environments.

It'll be fine with those loads.

Its too bad Old Bushmaster Weaponry couldn't adapt with the times.
