I bought a KAC rail that was badly painted.  I stripped the paint easily but now the rail is chalky.

I have used a light oil in the past, but it leaves it oily (duh).

Is there a better way?   Or just use oil?

Just asking for (potentially) a better way.

You might try wax - an automotive paste wax or wash&wax may do the job for you.  It would be much more durable than oil.  If you want something permanent, a rattle can of automotive clear coat would be an option.

Eezox will remove any remaining paint and leave behind a very slick, smooth, dry shiny surface.

Or degrease the rail thoroughly and re-coat it with ceracoat or just a better paint job.

@ronemus

I finally tried it and it seems to work decently well.  Much much better than what it looked like but still not perfect (although that will NOT be possible).

I used Lucas Slick Mist Speed Wax.

@taskmaster86

The Lucas will be easy to take off with a degreaser and ultrasonic cleaner.  I may try the Eezox.

I thought about cerakote, but this is a real KAC Vero Beach rail.  Although it would look better, it will kill the value significantly.

Maybe try Hornady One Shot. A dry lube and light cleaner. It doesn't leave behind an oily feel and over time will help to remove that last bit of paint residue.

OP I understand you wanted to remove the paint, but did you consider painting over it with your own? Was it too ugly to salvage with a new paint job?
