Close range interior defense? I'd reach for my P229 before any of those ARs.

whichever one is handy. At home defense distances I don't know that it's really going to matter much.
I've only got 5.56 ARs, and the only one I'd really want to wield in my house is an SBR with a suppressor on it.
Past that i've got 12ga and handguns that I can use.

Don't overthink this one too much OP

Everyone needs a 5.56 mm rifle until Uncle Sam chooses something different. It's cheap and plentiful. In a national emergency you can use government issue ammo. It's widely available and will remain so for well into the future.

Buy better bullets if you feel it may be necessary to hunt deer or pigs with it. Barnes or Hornady GMX will improve your success ratio.

Well said indeed.  Besides an AR, I also rely on my Glock 17.

6.8 at close range is nasty.

300 suppressed is great on the ears.

.50 BMG?

I own a 6.8 SPC that I use to hunt with. Often thought of doing a 14.5” 6.8 for HD but I still prefer a 14.5” or under 5.56 with a good HD load.
