I’m shooting a subgun match in a couple months, which includes an optional night shoot the evening before the main match. They require all guns to be suppressed for the night shoot. I’m not sure if that’s to keep from bothering the neighbors too much, or what.

I imagine a suppressor causes a pretty significant shadow in the beam of a gun-mounted light. So I’m thinking of mounting a light on either side of the gun using a forend with rails on both sides.

I’m not some Low-Speed, High-Drag Operator () so I’m not looking to spend a fortune on top of the line stuff. I’m just going to shoot a competition for fun.

So what’s a “decent” light these days?

 
I suppose that’s part of the reason for my question, trying to figure out in my head what “good enough” looks like. I’m not planning on getting a $400 light for something that might only be used once. At the other end of the spectrum are the $30 Chinese weapon lights from Amazon. Those probably aren’t robust enough for hard use, but they’re cheap enough for a one-time use. And for the price, I could mount two on the gun for added light & redundancy.

I was actually looking at the Streamlight ProTac HL-X, but I would prefer the version without the integrated rail mount, so I could use it as a handheld more easily. I’m not seeing the diameter of the light’s body in the specs. Anyone know if there is a removable rail that will fit it?

Or do I just slap on a couple of these and call it a day?

I guess the main difference being I would actually get some use out of the Streamlight later on. I’m kind of leaning in that direction.

I have a well-used Streamlight ProTac 2L that has been in my pocket for years. I figure worst case I could come up with a mount and attach that to the Uzi.

Currently my gun looks mostly like any other Uzi (currently without a light). I run a topcover rail and solid stock. But otherwise, pretty standard Uzi. Video from a recent subgun match below.

Things are coming along. I bought a Magpul Rail Light Mount, as it can accommodate a range of flashlight sizes.  I realize I can get something with an integral rail mount, but I’ll actually get more use out of this as a non-gun flashlight.

I ended up getting a Streamlight ProTac HL-X. I was able to remove the pocket clip and mount it in the Magpul mount.

I had originally intended to mount it on the topcover rail, offset to the right side, in front of the optic. But the mount hit the side of the topcover next to the rail. I would have had to do some surgery to make it work.

Before I tried that, I tried it on the small rail I have that attaches to the bayonet lug. I usually use this rail to attach a front grip, and the light mount fits and still just leaves room for a grip.



Mounted this way the light hangs off the left side of the gun, and the end of the light sticks out just a little farther than the end of the barrel. It also hangs out far enough that the shadow from a mounted suppressor really is not noticed at all. This is pointed at the floor. When it’s more than a few feet away you really don’t notice it.



The button at the rear of the light is easily accessible, but not really a natural reach when holding the gun. This might be a problem if I was all tacticool and busting down doors and stuff. But I expect I’ll just turn it on, wait for the timer to beep, and leave it on while I proceed to shoot steel and cardboard targets. When I’m done I’ll turn the light back off.
