What 6.8mm bullet would be best for either or both deer and hogs - south Texas sized for both.

New ammo supply is of course, impossible, so my choices are what's in hand, which are:

Horaday 120 and 125 grain SST bullets.

Horaday 110 grain Vmax bullets

SSA 115 grain Sierra MatchKing Hollow Point

SSA 110 open tip match

From the list, I'd think the SST bullets would be best, from what I've read on the Midway sight from users.

How about the 115 Sierra MatchKing Hollow Point?  Good for deer but not enough penetration for the tougher hog hide?

What bullets / rounds are you all using with your 6.8mm for 4 deer and hogs?

I have used the hornady 110 and 120 grain sst.

The 120 seems to work far better on deer.

We used to have deer run off with the 110's but not more then a step or two with 120s.

That's what I was thinking - the 110's I have are VMax (Varmit Max), so it sounds like they are for smaller and thinner skinned game and self defense.

Anyone use the SSA 115 grain Sierra MatchKing Hollow Point for game?  I have a bunch of those so would like to use those if OK for both deer and hogs.

6.8mm is supposed to put a whopping on both animals, am I correct?  Do you need to aim for the head on hogs with the 6.8mm or are body shots fine too, the 6.8mm having enough power to drop them with a shot there?

I've killed deer and hogs with 6.8spc

With what you have on hand I'd recommend the 120gr SST,It seems to have a great following.I've used it with good results.

Now what I use is the 90gr GD surplus and a buddy uses the 90 gr federal fusion....nearly identical I understand and our experiences indicate that is likely.

I've killed deer with the 110gr VMax and the 120 SST but the 90gr GD surplus has been DRT or dead within sight for all my shots.

Hogs have all been shot with 90gr GD,behind the ear equals Lights out!!!!!

Have not used the Barnes but I'd bet it would be good.

From what I read on a forum for 6.8’s the 120 SST seems to get good reports. My son and I hunt with 6.8’s but we use 110 grain Accubond hand loads. We’ve killed several deer a year with it for the last 10 years or so

The 100-110 Accubond is lights out accurate, bonded and flat out kills things
You eventually will learn this is a reloader cartridge
The 95 TTSX is supposed to be fantastic also
The 90 or 115 Gold Dot Fusion line would also be great
The SST on pigs I have had them run with other calibers
They frag about 30% I think Deer fine pigs bonded

Internal effects of GD/Fusions are really hard to argue with

I came to recommend Gold Dots, but of these options SST by a mile. I wouldn’t trust the SMK and OTM to perform with any consistency, and I wouldn’t trust the VMAX to penetrate adequately on hogs.

2 of my hog hunting buddies rock a 90 gr ish sst.   If you hand load you can get them screaming.   Every thing they have shot is a 1-2 shot kill (running pigs at 100 isnt easy under nods) gives then faster follow up shots and less recoil than my short 308.
