I just tighten them down as to be not too tight as to distort the crush washer and keep it timed correctly

A crush washer also acts as a one-time lock washer. For timing shims (or nothing), I would use Rocksett to keep it from coming loose.

From a strictly Mil SPec standpoint, the A2 flash hider torque spec is 15-20 ft/lbs. Mind you, it uses a peel washer... sort of a laminated shim pack, instead of a crush washer to time it. All of that said, if it will torque properly and time right, I don't see why it would be a problem.

OK. So is a crush washer or something a requirement or as I said can you get away without it if the hider indexes?
