I caved in and got a LE6933. Since that won't be getting to me for 8-12 months, I'm thinking of the next Colt AR to add to the collection.

A great-good condition used SP1 seems to be around $1500. Colt XM177E2 reissue looks absolutely beatiful but is much more expensive.

Which one would you get for a range toy, starter Colt AR collection?

I have a Colt LE6920, Colt AR-15 A4, and future LE6933.

I don’t understand how they can sell those reissues at that price when real sp1s can be had under 2k .

A SP1 or any older pre-ban Colt with the exception of a few LE models made up to around 2001. I would not consider the new Reissue Colts as collectible as much as some think they would be. Besides, they are not even made by Colt. They were made for Colt by US Ordnance.

SP1.  While cool, the reissue is only licensed by Colt

I would get an SP1 if you can find a decent condition one for the $1,500 range or less.

You'll also feel less guilty about shooting a used SP1 than a brand new ~ $2,500 colt collector piece.

The reissue looks so badass though, I’m thinking of buying one and actually shoot it.

I absolutely LOVE my Colt retros....  IMO, they are the most accurate/faithful reproductions that you can buy/build

Question, are mine Colts or not?

The answer is that they are not entirely Colt, but use many original Colt parts. The one below is a real Colt SP1 Sporter made by Colt.

This is a collectible as it is a real Colt-made product. The Reissue M16A1 is not a real Colt-made product.

Thanks!   I just don't understand the "haters"... Is Colt (as a company) perfect, of course not!  Do I wish the price was a bit lower, of course....  But, at least Colt is making what THEY say is a faithful reproduction of THEIR rifles!  Funny how some folks profess to know more than the OEM.
And as far as sub-contracting with other companies to produce parts, and participate in manufacturering, is a normal business practice these days, it's done in practically everything...

I applaud Colt for doing this for the enthusiast community.

If Colt was doing this for the enthusiast community, they would be having them made (by US Ordnance) to distribute as part of their regular lineup and selling them at a more reasonable price (around $1500). Instead, they had only $2500 units made and are selling them for a ridiculous price tag. The sad thing is that they are out of reach for most buyers that would want one. This is not catering to the retro community. When Colt produced the Sporters, they were for the entire community and not for the "collector" market. Personally, I will stick to all of my older Colt-made ARs, all six of them. Of course, I have to say, "to each his own".

I would look for a verified SP1.  I have seen several lately for under the $1500 mark.
