Couple of links to photos taken by David Douglas Duncan in Viet Nam.  Douglas was a Marine combat photographer in WWII and Korea.  You will most likely recognize some of the pics.

Gallery of Duncan's pics hosted by University of Texas

Life Magazine, October 1967

And here's one from Con Thien from the UT gallery.  Note the cotton web sling.

Pic of a clearly mismatched upper/lower.

To me this is the quintessential Vietnam pic. The fixed bayonet depicts a sense of urgency. Reminds me of Jim Caviezel from The Thin Red Line.

The book about his life, Heart of a Soldier, is definitely worth reading.

A friend of mine (old Army buddy) visited Vietnam recently on a business trip and went to a military museum that was displaying a variety of captured U.S. weapons, from 1911s to M2 .50 cal. They also offered tourists the opportunity to shoot the weapons. Setting aside the very emotional issue of how these weapons fell into Vietnamese hands, I think this is a potential opportunity to help determine the fate of some of our missing, if records exist to trace the serial numbers of these weapons:

Here is a closeup of an M16A1 at the range:

I’m going to talk to a few people in military history agencies and maybe contact JPAC to share these photos with them. I’m guessing our attachés or other official reps are tracking this information, but you never know, and my buddy was concerned about whether something could be done with this, so he passed them along to me.

My apologies if someone else has brought this up before, but I haven’t had a chance to read through the whole thread.

It is Cuban model AR10, made in 1957.  It has been very gently handled and not molested in any way.
I have learned several things after inspecting this gun.
1. The extractor is not chromed, (all later variants are chromed)
2. The handguard insulation is inferior to later Sudanese and Guatemalan models
3. The handguard decays with age alone.  Previously it was thought that firing decayed the HG.
4. Zero paint on the grip.

Reed Knight relayed this tale to me when I first met this gun.

According to Knight a crate came to Armalite from AI having maybe 10 Cuban AR10s (of which he presently owns 5).  When the crate arrived at Armalite some technician feared that the rifle's engraving violated federal law so he took it upon himself to inscribe the country of origin (Holland) on to the magwell of each gun from the crate.  You may notice this crude artwork on the Move Armaments Cuban.  Of course that technician had no idea that Nederland meant Holland.  All Knight's Cubans have this same scar.  The Cuban below is also crudely marked to the right of "Nederland".  The idiot used an awl

Below is the magwell on the "Movie Armaments" Gun

Militiamen in Hau Giang Province during a maneuvering exercise.

Hau Giang is covered in rivers and canals so militiamen spend a lot of time in the water. It's worth noting that the militiamen carry AR-15/M16A1 and special rigs for 20-round magazines.

Also notice how Ben's got the trigger guard opened, folded back, and taped. This was so he could get his finger inside the guard quicker while wearing gloves.
