I break down my rifle as soon as I'm done shooting and toss the upper and lower into the same compartment of my bag.
Is there something I can use to cover the upper with that will minimize scratches on it and also be resistant to a very hot barrel?

Needs to be low-profile, like a sock is low profile on your feet.

Something like a flame-proof towel.
But more purpose-designed.

What barrel length? M249 barrel bag might work.

I'm not sure about the heat resistance. But I use bore stores for what your asking.
Available in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Or a vci bag,

Something like this Gun Sock would be awesome.
This one is knitted though.  So, it would melt.

Sorry, it's a 16" barrel.
The upper is 23.5" overall length.

I'm researching the M240 barrel bag but so far it looks larger than I'd want.
Might be a really tight squeeze in my carry bag.
Nice idea though, I'm definitely considering it a fallback option.

My carry bag is about 26" deep.

Thanks for the suggestion.
That's leading me to a very wide variety of options.
I'm digging through them now.

I just remembered that my neighbor is a seamstress and has her own business making stuffed animals and other creative related things.
I bet she could make me the perfect gun sock!

Now to figure out what type of material would be suitable.
It needs to be breathable so as to not trap moisture.
But also heat resistant.
And smooth to the touch.

This abandoned patent has the right idea.

Actually, her prices are kind of expensive.
She must be making $$$ on those teddy bears.

I think I may just buy a fire blanket and cut it down to size.

If you have access to a sewing machine, the type of bag i posted is trivial to sew.

Look at welding blankets too.
Might be easier to work with.
