What surplus 7.62X51 ammo do you like and why? I’ve used the Hirt in the past from my SCAR and loved it, but haven’t really ever tested it for accuracy or anything. How does the Malaysian stuff compare, or otherwise shoot for you? Is there any other surplus flavors I should be looking at?

I'd almost guarantee the Hirt will outshoot the Malaysian stuff easily.

out of my rem700 sps tact 20"

at 200yards the Malaysian was about 4moa
Hirt was about 2-3moa

Magtech m80 was about 4moa as well

5 shoot groups

Ive had a few beers since then but I think thats about right

Strangely I've tried Hirt and Malay through my BM59, JRA M14, and DSA Stg58 matching w/ original barrel, and the Malay shot better.
The only 308 gun I have that shoots the Hirt better is my Argentine preban.
I prefer the Malay b/c of its accuracy in my guns.

Thank you all for your responses thus far. I do think it’s hard to top Hirt in general in terms of surplus ammo, at least out of my SCAR it shot a lot better than I thought it had any business shooting. I ordered up some of the Malay stuff too, I may swap out the ACOG for a scope and do a head to head mini-range report to see how it compares against the last of my Hirt stash.

I have two cans of the Malaysian but haven't shot any yet. Shot a bunch of Hirtenberger (and a lot of other countries surplus 7.62x51 ball) and the Hirtenberger is the cleanest burning of them all.

One of the few sub-MOA groups i’ve shot was Hirtenberger 7,62 NATO surplus with an M1A National Match rifle.

Hirt is excellent.

I like Hirt and MEN surplus. As above clean, reliable and good semiauto 308 accuracy.

agree

I also loved the zqi where some hated it.  The brass is outstanding for reloading, sealed, spec'd to german dak, uber reliable and reasonably accurate.  Wish we could still get it

But isn’t Hirtenberger Austrian?
In my BRN-10B, JRA M14, Stg58, the German DAG and Malaysian surpplus out performed the Hirtenberger by a good margin

Haven't shot any of the Malay yet but the Hirt has always shot well from my FAL's and SCAR's. Eventually I'll crack into the 4,000 rounds of Malay that's sitting on the floor.

In my C308 they are about the same; in my Colt 901 the Malay is substantially better. With a 10x optic I can hit clay pigeons at 300 yards off a bipod probably two times out of three, which is pretty damn impressive for cheap surplus ball. Sounds like bullshit and I have trouble believing it myself,  but it is what it is. Interestingly, the POI shift between that ammo and 168 FGMM was only a few inches at 300, which was convenient.

I don't think you can really go wrong with either, but I think the Malay is going for a tad less $ right now and comes in a sealed ammo can. Never had any function problems with either.
