Looking to have my 11.5” SBR with SilencerCo Hybrid suppressor as my primary/secondary HD gun (1:7 twist)

All I own is M195 55gr FMJ ammo

What’s a good HD round?  Links are welcome

i use 55gr FMJ: reliable, cheap to train with, good penetration against armors (burglars from eastern europe 2 years ago committed a crime near to my village using body armours, since then i keep in mind someone could use a body armor in an home invasion, even if not very likely to happen) and still pretty effective at cose range!

I use 64gr Gold Dot or 75gr T2 TAP depending what the gun likes better.

Price is not a factor in shooting home invaders.

I use Black Hills 77TMK, Hornady 75HD SBR, then training ammo if shooting past 150yds Magtech 77OTM.

Gold dot

That said Iv been loading 62gr TTSX , and adding to the stash for years.

Tons of good options, and I don't think a suppressor would autonatically rule out any that function well unsuppressed.

77 TMK, 77 SMK, 75 T2, Gold Dot/Fusion set a very high bar. If you need to penetrate barriers or potentially hardened surfaces, Barnes TSX, Hornady GMX, and Federal FBIT3 will all be devastating. But those loads are gonna hum through building materials with full mass, so keep that in mind depending on the setup of your domicile.

I keep my 11.5" full of 60gr TAP (V-Max) but I keep a bunch of 55gr M193 around too.
Either is very likely to fragment at HD ranges from an 11.5"

That being said, my primary HD is a 12ga autoloader full of Federal Flite Control 00B.

5.56 Frontier 75g uses the same bullet and is much cheaper. Velocity is a little lower though (I think).

There’s a lot of right answers these days. I load 77 TMKs in anything I plan on ever possibly needing to kill stuff with. I’ve used Gold Dots in the past, they worked fine too. A bit slower, a bit lower BC, and a bit less precise, but also a good bit less cost and at HD distance all their cons don’t matter.

Others have a thrown out a lot of good options. depending on your situation though, don't rule out Spitzer types like Vmax or Noslers if over penetration is a concern in your AO

I think I’m gonna order a few cases of the Hornady 5.56 75 grain SBR

Fusion non-MSR. I like the extra velocity, although I do not run a can (yet). Also like the IMI 69gr Razorcore. Have both in my stash and both pistols run 100% with those loads. Pistols are 10.5" and 11.5" 5.56 with standard weight buffers, carbine gas with non-adjustable gas blocks.

My rifle will always be suppressed.

Will I have to adjust the gas block each time I take it to the range to shoot FMJ ammo if I have HD ammo in it at home?

I have a 16 in barreled AR and I also use XM193 for home defense again it’s reliable, it fragments, and can go through lvl 3 steel armor at close range. For a short barrel I would say use a XM193 style round (federal, IMI, etc). If you want something fancy then use 77 grain IMI Razorcore.

Could be wrong, but I think the MSR version has a higher muzzle velocity than the non-MSR.

M193 and FMJs in general are highly velocity dependent and are a poor choice for SBRs. Pick a good expanding bonded soft point like Gold Dot or TBBC. TSX loads are also a good option.

My understanding is that conventional wisdom says that high velocities cannot normally be expected out of short barrels, so they should be loaded with ammo that doesn't rely on very high velocities to decelerate and dump energy into the target. Bullets that are designed to tumble or fragment normally rely on high velocity to successfully tumble and fragment, while bullets designed to expand are normally able to expand at much lower velocities.

So I'd go with some sort of heavy-for-caliber soft points.

50gr TSX is known for being a good performer out of 10.5-11.5 barrels

I recently shot some 20% gel with a 75 grain Hornady Steel Match from a 10.5 inch 1:7 LMT barrel with a form 1 suppressor.  It fragmented very well.  It would be my choice for defense if you're on a budget.

75 grain PPU also has impressive terminal ballistics based on Molon's thread from a few years ago.

How far out will 77g OTM's frag from an 11.5? Idk, but for most HD situations that's what I'd use. Gold Dots next.

Just curious as to why your would use 20% gel when testing is done with 10%?  Does it transport easier, or something?  I’ve seen others say this is what they use rather than 10%, but have no way of asking them.  This isn’t criticism, just curiosity.  I wimped out using wet gun magazines that soaked overnight as I didn’t have a frig to accommodate blocks.

I like tipped SMK 77 grain with about 1/2” neck.
