Yes, most standard barrel nut wrenches will work.  The 308 barrel nut's teeth are the same dimensions as a .223's.

I recommend a style of wrench which engages as many of the teeth as possible, rather than the old GI style that have only three or four pins and so concentrate all the force onto only a few teeth.  Wrenches patterned after the old DPMS style, which have a full ring of teeth (except for a slot in the side to slip the wrench over the barrel) have worked well for me.

i am really sure the ar15 barrel nut is not the same size wrench as an AR10 .  I just did a free float install on my AR10 with an A2 handguard and i needed a different size.

You can go over to Young manufacturing and buy their ar15/ar10 barrel nut combo wrench.

While the diameter of the threads, and barrel extension on the .308 are much bigger, the barrel nut, was designed to take the M16 barrel nut wrench.

Ah, I see!  mine is a PSA and the barrel nut is not the same!  grrrr.  I had to do a bit if a hack (literally) because I could only get 2 pins in the wrench to align and took a chance and cut off the center pin.  It worked!
