In AR discussions, there is the GOTO/SHTF rifle.  What do you consider to be your SHTF optic of choice?

I went with an Accupoint 1-4 for no need for batteries.  I have a TA-31H on another rifle for proven hard use (that I will never do) and no batteries.  Have a Mepro Tru Dot on an x95 for taking double AAs and put through paces in the IDF.

Just curious as to what and why, whether it is something you have now or would like to have.

ACOG for me. TA33 with an RM01 on top on my primary.

S&B short dot 1x8
NX8 1x8

I have an NX8, I'd like the Short dot some day. NX8 is daylight bright, versatile, light weight, and most importantly durable.

I would be happy with most of the ones I already have, but the TA-31 would probably get the nod due to not needing batteries.

My Ta01 is about 22 years old now, and has gotten a bit dim.  Otherwise,  it would fit the bill nicely, too.

If it wasn't for the battery situation, I would choose the Elcan, but only because it has a piggybacked rdo for close range targets.

Nightforce NX8 1-8 or Vortex Razor 2 1-6

I have both and they are excellent for everything from 0-300 and useable well beyond that though I prefer my ATACR 3-16

I like to try new optics when possible But I always go back to the 01nsn and the little Ta44.

Aimpoint would be another great option.

The Sig Romeo4T I’m currently using seems good so far.

I'm happy with what I got.

DDM4V7LW has a Vortex Viper PST Gen2 1-6x

BCM Recce 11 has an Eotech EXPS 3. I have a box of 3v batteries. I think I'll be okay.

I have rifles with Vortex pst 2.5-10x, Aimpoints and Romeo 4T/Mil-spec too but the V7 and Recce 11 are my go to.

Not a bad choice.

SHTF is a different scenario in everyone’s mind.

I think it will be more like EVERYTHING is illegal under a super oppressive gov/police where running gun battles and armed patrol/overwatch will be met with extreme measures.

My ultimate SHTF gun?  Glock 43. Because I’m a lowly laborer trying to scurry around without being noticed.

mine is also an Accupoint 1-4. It's old and abused so I know it will stand up. Fiber optics work pretty much no matter what and I have probably 100k rounds through this scope so I know how to run it within 400 yards. I doubt we need much distance but I want something that just works.

Also the best would be IR and very expensive goggles, cause not everyone has those.

Aimpoints are great. I'm considering trying a micro RDS on a 45 degree mount. The irons on top of the 01NSN work, but rotating the gun seems to be a split second faster than moving the head up a bit. Gotta try it to find out though...

I like my basic 4-12 Nikon. SHTF for me means effective hunting.

Planning to add a Romeo on a 45 rail for an unmagnified backup. Just don't like that it'll need batteries.

For me, it is an Aimpoint red dot with good quality iron sights as back up.

I live in a small house in a large city.  SHTF for me is an intruder coming into my home.  It will most likely be a burglar.  Then again, there are the Richard Ramirez (the Night Stalker) types all over since they opened the doors to the insane asylums.  No matter their intent, for me, SHTF is an intruder who will be met with deadly force.

Either my TA11 or anyone of my aimpoints. I'm not that worried about the battery life since I do have some extras and, at 30,000 - 50,000 hours, it would take a while before it would become an issue.

I keep a fresh battery in the sight (changed annually) and keep a fresh spare.

Probably an Aimpoint H/T series, though I have total confidence in Eotechs and find them to be more capable.

RE: battery life, it's obviously important. But, if you can't get your hands on a common battery in 20,000 hours of use (or whatever massive figure), you have far larger problems than your gun and your survivability is zero regardless of how your rifle is setup.

I’m a big fan of the Accupoint 1-4, light, durable and good glass. It’s a great 0-300 optic. The acogs are good, their only downside is the eye relief on the 4x. They’re not the best for in close but you can train and get better.

Have actually considered selling the TA-31 and buying another Accupoint.

I did put the ACOG on an American Defense 1.93 extended eye relief mount that helps, but fixed power are not my favorite.

An ACOG, preferably with an RMR, is easily one of the most versatile choices for a general purpose carbine optic. It is also probably more durable than any rifle it’ll be mounted on, while also being lighter and more compact than most any other comparable options.

Also FWIW and for reference, I have a lot of rifles that I *could* grab “for real”, but I have three rifles actually *would*. An 11.5” KAC w/ a T2 as a short rifle, a 14.5” KAC w/ a 31/RMR as a general rifle, and a 14.5” BCM ELW w/ a 33/RMR as a lighter weight alternative.

Chuck Pressburg knows more than anyone in this thread ever will about getting into gunfights of all kinds and "SHTF" requirements. He chose the Vortex Razor 1-6. He likely has or will have an offset MRD mounted to that weapon.

Since he has infinitely more experience than I do in this arena, and I understand the reasons why that particular optic was selected, I want something with the same qualities. (Since I don't feel I will be forced to choose immediately, I can explore a little bit, so there are other similar LPVOs on my radar.)

If I had to choose NOW, give me a Razor G2-E 1-6 in a Scalarworks 1.93 mount with Magpul Pro backups. I'd also like a Holosun 509T on an Arisaka 35-degree offset mount, if I may.

After months of preaching the virtues of the ELCAN and LPVOs in general, I’m back to where I started. Aimpoints and ACOGS only on my ARs. Specifically the Compm5 and TA31. Although I want a TA33.

There’s just something about a lightweight rifle.

I've also settled on the Trijicon TR24 Accupoint as the ideal general purpose / SHTF optic due to size, weight, durability, and illumination. Perfect 0-300 yard optic that can go further if you can dial elevation.

I have a bunch of ACOGs, and, while I really like their size, weight, and durability, they are a hindrance inside 50 yards. They've all been relegated to DMR style guns or lightweight run-and-gun match rifles.

Vortex Razor 1-6x is also a great choice, but mine is so heavy (non-E model) that it only balances on an otherwise lightweight rifle. Still my number 2 pick for a SHTF optic, and I may feel different if I had the lighter E model.

Just bought a Trijicon TR25 1-6x off the EE, so I'll be evaluating it as a primary SHTF optic once it arrives.

Either a TA31 w/ piggybacked rmr or an ELCAN with piggybacked mrd. Either one would serve you well.

All you LPVO guys, have you actually ran them shooting from unconventional shooting positions?  SHTF you aren't sitting on a bench with a good sight picture, that eyebox IS a problem.  You can work around it, but you have to understand the limitations of what the optic will allow.

Yes, extensively. Plenty of quality LPVOs have generous eye boxes. Especially 1-4x and 1-6x optics. More of a problem on the higher magnification optics.

Or

I just got done carrying a rifle for a decade, I know how to shoot.  Most newbies to LPVOs by Strike Eagles, and those definitely have eye box issues.  Higher end stuff is way more forgiving, but most ARFCOMers don't have the super high end LPVOs

Even with lower priced optics if you actually practice with it won’t be an issue.

With a plate carrier on, guys I worked with were having issues with em at goofy angles.  And they were all military, I was the oddball that didn't have any combat experience for that job.  I only have variables on my 6.5 AR's, girlfriend has a 1-6x on her 16" but I don't really shoot it.
