I don't know if we have ever done one of these. Seeing as though it's a new year/decade I propose a retro show off thread. Most of us just post our builds when we get done and then they fade into memory as the years go on. So......lets see your best, most accurate builds. The more accurate with original parts the better of course but super accurate builds with all reproduction parts are welcome also. Please......don't post your 601 build with a A2 lower. Don't forget a brief narrative/history on the build and show them internals also. I will not go first because that would be in poor form.
@M16indiana @AmericanSheepDog @M1sniper @boywonder Someone also give a shout out to John Thomas because I don't know his user name. |

Most all of mine are works in progress and I can’t take detailed pictures that I don’t already have because I don’t have the rifles with me here in GA, but here’s what I’ve got. Hopefully parts are acceptable for now:
Attached File One of my earliest attempts at a retro rifle, and a pretty good job if I say so myself. 100% correct 1965ish XM16E1, aside from the Nodak 100% lower I used, and had engraved by Ident Marking. I thought this would be my favorite rifle until I discovered the 601. The barrel is an M VP 12, the upper is a square forge that I had stripped and re-finished by US Anodizing. Inside is a real XM16E1 chrome carrier with flat head firing pin. I will ultimately re-build this rifle onto one of the XM re-welds below. Attached File XM16E1 and M16A1 rewelds done by braceman. Attached File What I am truly the most proud of are these uppers. They were all built from parts, except the 602. From left to right, an extremely early 601 upper. Has a Winchester 1/14 barrel (unmarked), carbon steel gas tube and proper bolt carrier group. Next is an early 601 also with a Winchester 1/14 barrel (W S marked). After that is a law enforcement 601 with what I have determined to be a Colt barrel with “M1” marking forward of the FSB and “C” on the extension. The fourth one is a later 601 with “M1” and “C” just like the previous one. Finally, I have a real 602 upper that retains the original “VP 12” barrel. Attached File This is a real 601 re-weld that will likely be attached to the second upper from the left. Attached File The lowers for the remaining rifles in the picture. They are all nodak 80%s engraved by braceman before he stopped doing the Colt pony. |

I’m laughing at the last post (not worthy) as I felt the same way. The bar was very high already when I got here. I went through a phase where I was using hard to find local pre ban A1 lowers on all my builds. Later I added NDS lowers to the mix along with a few engraved 80%. I have at least one of each A1 model, except a 606, which I took apart and recycled into other builds. My 607 and 608 are still in boxes waiting to be assembled. Stamps held me up with trust engravings.
I would put most of my builds in the category shooters with a mix of original parts and clone parts. Over the years when I stumble on an original part I don’t have, I buy it to replace a clone part. I was looking for all the build pictures I had, but between new phones and hosting sites holding me hostage, I don’t have many left. I guess it is time to take them all out and shoot some new pictures for the retro family album. |

Honestly I have a ton of builds in progress in need of lowers. My thing is I don’t like to have any repro items (except lower) on my rifles which makes them slow.
The only builds that are complete right now are my 601 which I posted times before, 727 factory cutaway and factory original ACR. The later of the 2 being 80’s vintage so have never been posted here. I am working on an m231, doe, factory a1 cutaway (just needs lower) and some other newer models like the SCW, factory a2 cutaway( just needs lower) and some lmg’s. I also have a 656 which came from the factory on a 1966 colt sp1 lower which is 100% but have been on the hunt for a correct scope. Also a prototype stainless heavy barrel they were testing. It would just go on a normal 604 style lower so haven’t gotten around to it. Attached File Attached File Attached File Attached File |

The bar has been raised so high since I first showed up here its ridiculous, being mentioned is an honor though. All my builds are on Nodak lowers.I remember the first time I saw someone doing a re-welded / 80% lower and was just blown away. aeyoung's collection is a freaking private museum.
I might take some pics of my humble nodak lower'd builds tomorrow in the day light |

Damn! I can’t wait until I can actually take part in this thread hopefully in the next few months my build will be done. It’s a 1966 XM16E1 build off of a demilled magwell that is currently in Braceman’s possession for welding

I've thinned some of my retro stuff to fund my vintage Triumph motorcycle obsession so here are my main three. The first is my Hydra-Matic build which is my most accurate build. She's all GM except the rear half of the receiver and thanks to Braceman it's alive again. https://i.imgur.com/D5ikT7P.jpg https://i.imgur.com/dcGWU4l.jpg https://i.imgur.com/PQrnDTG.jpg https://i.imgur.com/Eo0eMso.jpg https://i.imgur.com/tHIOe0P.jpg https://i.imgur.com/JZkQvMZ.jpg https://i.imgur.com/LUzUcFl.jpg https://i.imgur.com/EmjIe9h.jpg My early XM177 (Form 1 SBR). All Colt furniture, 604 square forge upper, NoDak partial lower, barrel reprofiled by JT, original Colt no drain, no flash FSB, repro early bend carbine tube and Colt 3/4 round carrier with thin band MP bolt. https://i.imgur.com/c6Zuuf2.jpg https://i.imgur.com/j64ugNm.jpg https://i.imgur.com/cWxmC5m.jpg https://i.imgur.com/fadt9Cv.jpg https://i.imgur.com/zZZtufH.jpg https://i.imgur.com/UAjM2wZ.jpg My 602 build. This one is all about being in the right place, at the right time with cash in hand. The upper was NOS when I received it and has less than 20 rounds down the tube. Unfortunately the handguards are Type D's but they compliment the build just fine IMHO. BCG is a Colt full round and bolt is a P marked thin band with early squared extractor, early bend carbon steel gas tube, Colt charging handle. Type C stock, 602 thin grip, Edgewater, etc, etc. It's amazing how light this rifle is. Lower has all original Colt parts and is an 80% that I milled out and some wizzard engraved prior to US Anodizng making it look nice. https://i.imgur.com/LX1o8TX.jpg https://i.imgur.com/yVnPN8N.jpg https://i.imgur.com/FU9SRcF.jpg https://i.imgur.com/iY3RlRJ.jpg https://i.imgur.com/GvIpyjS.jpg https://i.imgur.com/HKQsLFx.jpg https://i.imgur.com/hUCnRnt.jpg https://i.imgur.com/2VxHe5N.jpg https://i.imgur.com/MV0qxCA.jpg https://i.imgur.com/JHb6aDe.jpg https://i.imgur.com/gIm1Ydr.jpg https://i.imgur.com/ZofCBCI.jpg https://i.imgur.com/bKjaqhH.jpg https://i.imgur.com/WGdnbsR.jpg https://i.imgur.com/dj7lTmn.jpg View Quote |

View Quote NICE build and the Delft makes it. Any info on it and your build? |

Not sure how MY name came up since I am a friggin pedestrian piker comparatively speaking but I guess my M16A.75 or M16A-3/4 or Retro Middy may qualify.
No new pics but lemme see what I got. Attached File Attached File Attached File As far as I know I'm the only one who has done one. SO much help from members on here and I can't remember who all helped. ?? I know JT did the barrel work and another member did the rear leg bayo lug. Stock is probably one I got from Pfluegerville TX. I wish I was better at remembering who helped but if y'all had a hand in it holler out for accolades! All you Glorious Bastards have my undying nongay man love! |
|
I should mention, the colt scope hanging out on my 601 is only there until I can get a Delft. Need the Cha-Ching for that to happen though.

My humble additions. My retro rifles have dwindled down to just one. My avatar is a picture of my dad, so I wanted a nice representation of that time period. It’s not intended to be an H&R clone, but just a 603 clone. All original parts except the NDS lower and lpk. https://i.imgur.com/4GfjiP6.jpg https://i.imgur.com/yuOLJcE.jpg https://i.imgur.com/4ZfIxzF.jpg https://i.imgur.com/SfpkZxu.jpg XM117E2 - All Colt stock parts, upper receiver and bcg. NDS lower, Bushy barrel. https://i.imgur.com/5lh2g8h.jpg View Quote Nice builds. Your 603 is practically a HRA clone. The upper is the hardest part to find and a nice upper it is. Nice carbine also! |

Even though I was not tagged for this, I will take up a little space with my retros. Many have original parts, including barrels, stocks, receiver extensions, handguards, pistol grips, upper receivers, rear sights, LPKs, CHs, BCGs, and FHs.
