Looking for recommendations on a basic red dot sight for a new AR-15 build.  Want it for home defense and target shooting at 50 to 100 yards.  Don't need top of line.  Just something that I can use in self defense with little light and have fun at the range with in daylight. I have back-up sights (Magpul MBUS) flip-ups.

I  have a couple budget optics. One is a Sig Sauer Romeo 5. It works good. It can be found, on line, for $130 or less shipped. I am not telling you that this is what you should get, but it is worth a look. Also, take a look at the torture test over on YouTube. It was enough to convince me. I have no clue about how it will last long term but it would be worth adding to your considerations.

Check the EE, there are some budget optics that you can get at an even lower cost used.

Holosun, Primary Arms, Vortex, Etc.

I went Vortex sparc AR.

I had the 1st gen sparc, and sold it because the screwy batteries SUCKED.
The SPARC AR with a battery  that can be found in any store ANYWHERE is a huge selling point.

Yeah Sparc Ar here also 2 actually work great
holds zero.Uses AAA batteries 1.
Nice bright dot.
Also have an Aimpoint T1 to compare it to the
Aimpoint is nicer with the constant on but at 1/3 to 1/4 the price I
like the Sparc better.
Paid 160.00 for the last one.

For the price, hell for nearly twice the price, you really can't beat this one.

Vortex makes a couple of good cheap red dots. The SPARC AR and the Crossfire. Cool thing about Vortex is their lifetime unconditional warranty still counts for pre-owned stuff. So you still get their awesome warranty even if you buy a cheap used SPARC AR off the EE.

Cheap, reliable and functional 100 yard red dot for an AR or similar rifle?
Bushnell TRS-32. 5MOA red dot, has lasted several thousand rounds on my BREN 805. I get tons of crap about a cheap optic on an expensive rifle, but it works just fine. I have used it and the same companies TRS-25 2MOA red dot for years without issue, and sometimes you can find the TRS-25 as low as $60 on sale. Battery life on level 2 (for indoor use), is consistent at 5 months for me. For basic, cheap and solid, can't beat it.

Not on sale, but this is the one.

Watch for color shift from tinted lenses. All the Holosun ones I check were pink tinted. Trijicon was blue. Sig and PA were neutral.
Also make sure the emitter is low and out of sight.

Aimpoint Pro, buy one and your done. It will last, not use up batteries and always work. 10 year warranty.

Their Carbine optic is $40 cheaper +/- if you don't want NV capability.

I have Primary Arms cheaper dot ($85.00) and it works, but I don't trust stuff made in China.

Here is one for you:

You can get it on Amazon for less than $20.

Cheap red dot but it seems to be the same as a Bushnell TRS 25, which is not too bad of an inexpensive scope.

Not military quality by a long shot.  Defiantly not an Aimpoint or Trijicon.  I wouldn't take it to a winter campaign in the mountains of Afghanistan but for range and maybe hunting it should be OK.

For shits and giggles I bought one.  I put it on a Sig 716 Patrol (.308) to see what it would do.  It held up to the hard recoil for the 100 rds I shot.

Based upon that one test it seems to be OK for a .223.

Don't know how how long it will last but so far it looks OK.

I killed 2 similar dots (Fieldsport) with 5.56 inside 500 rds. Waste of time.

I think they are basically a hit or miss deal.  Maybe you will get one that holds up and maybe you won't.

The one I bought held up for the .308 pounding so maybe it will be OK, or maybe not.

With the Trijicon MROs for less than $400 most places and the Sig Romeo 5s for much less than that then are certainly other better choices.

The only reason I bought one is because it was so cheap and it looked like a rebranded TRS 25, which is not too bad for an inexpensive RDS.  The money I paid for it was worth the one trip to the range to blast with the .308.

In the $100 range, Bushnell's TRS-25 is reliable and amazingly durable.  I run mostly duty grade optics, but the TRS-25 I bought 5 or 6 years ago just keeps on going.

Only negative is high battery drain at high illumination.  If you can run it low at night, it will last quite a few months.  If you run it high for full sunlight, it will eat batteries.  B sure to turn it off or back down to "2" or so.

For $200 look at the Burris Fastfire 3.  It is a small, light mini-reflex that will not block your peripheral vision.  It has an 8 hour auto shutoff, which is great for HD at night.  It will get you through until dawn.

While I've switched to duty grade HD optics (Leupold Deltapoint Pro), I still run  Fastfire 3 on a tactical shotgun.  It is impervious to the heavy recoil.

I went with the Vortex Optics SPC-AR1 SPARC.  I liked that it's powered from an AAA battery and they have a lifetime warranty.  I noticed that the view is slightly obstructed in the lower right corner of the viewfinder.  There is a little piece of molding or something that extends into the view finder. In other words, there is not a full circle of view.  It's very slight but annoying and I was wondering if this is a defect or is just the way the product is made.  It doesn't effect the dot or amount to much but if it's a defect I'll return it for a new one.

For a good red dot that wont break the bank, this is the answer.  The PA/Sig versions are fine, too, but might as well get the circle dot if the prices are similar.

Trs 25 is another poor choice in a world where you can get 5 yrs of battery life from the competition.

Primary Arms MD-RB-AD is good to go. Battery life is insane, easy enough to get zeroed. I have mine on a riser mount on my Colt 6920 for HD and range play. I love it.

Sig Romeo 5 is really really hard to beat for $98.00

It has an auto-on when it senses slight movement and will auto-off if it doesn't sense any movement after 4 minutes.
