Today I received a call from my FFL that the PSA 16" MID-LENGTH complete UPPER I ordered earlier in the week had arrived. So of course I dropped everything and went to go pickup my new toy. When I got there, I looked it over and everything looked good. After I got home I had to log in to finish up some work, so I had to wait a bit before oiling it and pairing it to its upper. However, when I pulled out the bolt carrier group and turned the upper upside down I had a small pin and spring fall out and onto the table. I have been looking it over for the past couple of hours and cannot to the life of me figure out where they go. I am hoping someone on here can help point me in the right direction. Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

The first picture is the upper with the bolt removed. The last picture is the pin and spring in relation to the bolt carrier group.

Is your ejector present on the bolt?

ejector pin and spring, from end of bolt.  Google schematic of ar15 upper.

Those are not from any standard AR upper assembly, so they must belong to some sort of detent or other assembly unique to that handguard/rail system.

Congrats you got some extra parts. The pin is a extra bolt exactor pin the spring is unknown and appears not to belong to the ar line of rifles.

But both are still in the bolt, unless they really are extra parts lol

This right here.

The spring looks like a segment of an ejector/safety detent spring

Looks like the plunger detent and spring from the forward assist pawl assembly.

I would check and make sure the pawl did not get broke off during test firing.

Why did you have the upper shipped to an FFL, instead of directly to you?

You my friend are the man! Took out the forward assist and it is missing the pawl. Easy enough fix, but sucks that it has to be fixed on a brand new upper.

Not easy to fix if the upper is letting the forward assist and the end of the pawl sit too far into the carrier channel.

Crap. I didn't think about that. I thought it may have been a bad part, but if it is the upper receiver itself , that will blow.

Sure thing.  Late  last night I found the forward assist pawl on the ground, under the edge of the bed (where I opened the box.) It looks like the pawl spring pin broke. What is left is still in the pawl. Unfortunately, I did not have any backup parts for the FA, so now I have order a couple so I can replace this one and have a backup.

Thank you sir! I greatly appreciate that. So far so good. Just waiting for the part now. Once it gets here I will let you know. As of now I am not expecting any issues. Any product can have an occasional dud or flaw, so can't fault you all for that. As long as it's not  a common or frequent occurrence, I am happy.
