Just finished my first build today which is also my very first AR-15. The guides on this forum made this a snap and I learned a lot about the gun by putting it together myself.
It's a Del-ton 20 inch rifle kit with a Spikes lower. It's a real basic A2, because I don't know what I really want or need out of the rifle yet, so I figured I'd just live with a solid KISS setup for now until I learn the platform. Only perks were an ergo sure-grip and chrome lined barrel. All said and done it cost me about $650 to put together. http://www.tarsis.org/all_parts.jpg http://www.tarsis.org/accessories.jpg I think the case, mags, cleaning kit, sling and initial ammo will probably cost as much as the gun |

My Build is on hold till I can get my Magpul Stock and the remaining parts for my Upper Receiver.
So far I have a JC Weaponry MEGA Lower Receiver, MEGA Upper Receiver, Double Star Two Stage Trigger, Magpul MIAD Grip, Bushmaster Pins, Springs, Magazine Release, Bolt Carrier Release, Forward Assist, and Door. I needed a way to display my AR until I get it finished and I think that I may display it using this after I am finished so I made an Oak stand for it. http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/4584/0000041yh8.jpg |

Mmmm. Gun Porn.
My just finished AR. Built up with: DPMS 16" Hvy A2 Colt Sporter HBAR upper and lower VLTOR Stock Tango down vertical grip Hogue pistol grip Hydraulic buffer Smith Enterprise muzzle break You'll also notice a couple of build photos. I installed new parts and swapped parts between 2 rifles to create the 16" and 20" with scope. Kind of a convoluted way to do things. I had purchased a Flat top to replace the standard A2 upper years ago, and had it sitting in a box. I decided to build a 2nd rifle based off of the A2 upper. The flattop was built on a stripped Bushmaster lower and (forgot the name) flattop, with the 20" barrel from the original Colt. The BM lower has a standard DPMS parts kit installed. I will be buying a match trigger when $ allows. Also, some shots with my other little green monster. Enjoy! http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2017.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2018.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2019.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2020.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2021.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2024.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2025.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2027.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2028.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2030.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2035.jpg http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd114/helotech/IMG_2036.jpg |

Just finished my first build up today. It took me 2 days. I had to spend one of those days building everything and the other leveling, pinning, and cutting various parts to make evething fit snug.
Heres what I went with.... Noveske Lower Black rifle works lower parts kit (great trigger setup for the money, better than DPMS) Magpull MIAD grip SOPMOD stock and buffer from LMT DTI upper DTI Chromolly barrel YHM supp. (nice and sharp on the ends.....haha) YHM flip up front sight and gas block YHM backup rear sight DPMS Chrome plated bolt carrier and bolt Sampson MFG rail system Ran me about 1350 total. Have a look, let me know your thoughts. http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/ihateclevernames/021800x600.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/ihateclevernames/011800x600.jpg http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n223/ihateclevernames/010800x600.jpg The only problem is that now I have done this one, I want to do another one.....haha |

Sorry for the poor pics, 2nd build. I went a little silly with the tacticool doodads on my 1st one, so I wanted to keep this one simple. I'll take better pictures using natural light instead of room lights later:

Not sure yet, I have to go out and buy some more ammo to see what it likes. All I have right now are some XM193 rounds. I'd like to buy some 62-69gr loads to see how the 1:7 works, I've only shot out of a 1:9 before.

Finally finished my budget build.
$105 DPMS Lower Reciever $389 Blackthorn A2 Parts kit $ 29 Scope and mount $2 Ejection port cover pin $525 Total Parts $ 30 David Tubbs Final Finish Loaded ammo $555 Total Took it to the range today and funtion tested with Cheap federal and Wolf Military ammo. 20 rounds of each functioned flawlessly. Then Cleaned the bore very well. Ran the David Tubbs Final Finish rounds through as instructed. Then Fired 5 round group to see what the accuracy looks like. The group is 2.125 Center to Center with Federal red box ammo. How does this compair with anyone else for accuracy? http://gallery.photo.net/photo/6705949-md.jpg http://gallery.photo.net/photo/6705950-lg.jpg http://gallery.photo.net/photo/6705955-lg.jpg http://gallery.photo.net/photo/6705952-lg.jpg |

Good starter rifle, KISS, you may catch BRD. I've got a Del-ton Middy that shoots MOA and a Colt 20" HBAR that'll shoot Sub-MOA. That is not with Wolf ammo. Try some match grade stuff like Federal Gold 69gr.

Thanks for the reply.
What is BRD? |

BRD (Black Rifle Disease)

What does that pece on the front of ACOG do? |
It's like a sunshade on a regular scope. It hides the reflection of the foward lens. No sense in giving the bad guy an aiming point.
for me though it just keeps the scope from getting a scratched up

What is the purpose of a "Vortex" flash hider?
To jab at the kidneys of unruly burglars as they are proned out on your kitchen floor. |
To hide the flash of course. The Vortex is one of the most effective at suppressing flash. The individual tines vibrate to help dissipate the unburned gasses that escape the end of the barrel, thereby reducing the flash signiture at night. This helps keep the user from losing his night vision while firing. And to confuse Californians. (just kidding) |

I'm new to the board, might ask some stupid questions, still a little lost on some things but,....Really considering building one. i like the look of this one? what would be the cheapest way to build one like this. I want one small and still be able to shoot a good distance, just want it to target shoot a bit, would this be the right length. do they sell a kit like this one? i know i want a phantom and the floating hand rail by 7'' larue or maybe troy like this one. vertical handle in the front, laser and small scope/sight of some sort. can you guys give me some options. would this length AR be legal in central illinois? thinking there might besome good deal around this time since christmas is close. thanks lance
also what would total length on this one of osu-eric i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd127/edaum_photos/100_0051.jpg OSU_ERIC Member OH, USA Stag Lower, LPK and Charging Handle Magpul CTR, MIAD and Trigger Guard Troy 7" MRF and Rear Battle Sights Young NM BCG CMT Upper CMMG 14.5 M4 Barrel w/ Phantom 5C2 |
