Hi! I bought an AR15 recently. I’ve noticed that some boxes of ammo say 5.56 x 45mm and some just say 5.56MM. What is the difference? Can I shoot either of them?

Also, I bought an extra magazine that says 5.56 x 45 on it. Should I not shoot ammo with it that doesn’t have the 45 on the box?

I’m new to AR’s, and this may be a silly question. Just trying to be well educated about it. Thanks

5.56 is just an abrevation for 5.56x45
5.55mm= bullet diameter
45mm= case length
You are good to go

Everyone has to start somewhere my dude. No dumb questions when a mistake could cause significant harm or worse.

If the rifle is chambered for 556 (look for markings on the barrel, they’re what determine the caliber), then you’re safe shooting 223 Remington as well.

The reverse is not true.

You can also shoot .223 Remington ammunition through your 5.56 rifle.

For instance every Ruger Mini in those calibers but one model is capable of handling 5.56.
I can't recall exactly but IIRC it was target version of some kind.
google...................
According to Ruger Customer Service, "All Mini 14 and Ranch Rifle series except the Mini-14 Target model, are chambered to accept both . 223 and 5.56 ammo notwithstanding what is marked on the receiver."Oct 12, 2015
Some other ARs in the past have been capable of shooting 5.56 though marked .223.  Varies by maker.

5.56 mm is not the bullet diameter. That would be .224 inches.

5.56 mm = .2188 inches

Just be sure what your barrel twist rate is. I have one AR with a 1/9" twist so it may not be able to stabilize 68gr-77gr rounds. It does shoot 55gr, 62gr, and 64gr of 5.56 rounds just fine. My other AR is 1/7" twist so it can stabilize heavier grain rounds. I know some barrels are 1/8 twist which should stabilize heavier rounds as well but I don't own any ARs with a 1/8" barrels.

I had a friend that had a Mini 14 that I shot a couple times and loved it! It's on my list of things to buy one day.
