Guys,
    I don't remember using MK 318 SOST on deer or hogs. But I have used it on varmints/predators and it worked fine. Like M855A1, I have found MK 318 MOD 0 to not have the accuracy I require for longer shots. And I can never tell when I will need that accuracy. But former DOD guys I know that shoot a lot of hogs back in TX have used SOST on hogs and it worked fine. MK 318 SOST is NOT yaw dependent, so the front of the SOST bullet fragments quickly in the wound channel while the core penetrates. We asked Doc Roberts on this board which DOD round would be the better choice, the non-expanding/fragmenting MK 318 MOD 0 SOST or the expanding/non-fragmenting 5.56MM 70GR. TSX OPTIMIZED brown tip. Doc stated that the expanding 70GR. TSX OPTIMIZED brown tip was the better choice in his opinion. But I don't think that the SOST was that far behind. I did a quick water-shot comparison between SOST & TSX. To keep things relatively equal, I used the 5.56MM 62GR. TSX load instead of the 5.56MM 70GR. TSX brown tip load both fired from a 10" M4. Either one will work fine but we now have even better choices IMO.

Here is a pic showing water-shot comparison of SOST-LC M193-SWA 5.56MM 70GR. TSX fired into water from the 10" M4: Just to keep it real, the DOD 5.56MM 70GR. TSX OPTIMIZED brown tip is/was about 75 FPS faster than the SWA 5.56MM 70GR. TSX load in the 10" M4. The big difference between the 2 loads was the propellant and the MV. The DOD load used a spherical propellant while the SWA load used IMR 8208 XBR.

@leid
That's a great comparison!
Funny thing, my reloaded mk318 bullets I just worked up a couple weeks ago chronoed at 2503 fps.
Now I know exactly what they'll do when they hit.
Thanks!

Hey Leid, how would you compare the damage from the mk318 to what the 77gr TMK does? Was it about on par, or not quite as devastating?

From the animals I've shot with both the TMK wins in sheer destruction, but its close. The TMK seems to produce a longer wound cavity than mk318 mod1. The TMK also gives larger exit wounds, although it doesn't always exit. IME the mk318 always exits, but the exit is usually pinprick

I have been shooting deer and hogs with my own loads, 70 g Barns TSX , LC brass, WC844 and CCI 41 primers to 556 pressure.  They work great.   Kills the hell out of stuff and almost always exits unless its a big hog.   Lots of damage for a small caliber.  I was using this before I even heard about the military brown tip ammo.    Im running 2800 fps from a 14.5 inch M4.
I have also shot stuff with 69 g MK bullets loaded hot.  They do a lot of damage  without no exit hole most of the time.

Mk 318 MOD 0/1 SOST is pretty damn effective for a Hague complaint, non-expanding 5.56MM DOD round. But the BHA 5.56MM 77GR. TMK round still sets the bar by which I judge the terminal performance of all other 5.56MM rounds on flesh & bone targets for SD/HD/hunting. .02

My load out usually has Mk318 or Mk262.  Just depends on what we have on hand.  My boss hoards the Brown tip for himself :)

No hogs yet, but I've shot several coyotes with MK318. It performs great overall despite not being quite as accurate as other loads. I stopped using heavy otm's (77gr TMK and Hornady 75gr) and just use MK318 and Barnes 70gr TSX exclusively now.

Thats some expensive ammo for coyotes lol. I usually just shoot them with 55gr wolf HP, or if I need longer shots use 69gr smk handholds. Do you take longer shots? any idea of the effect at range? Myarea the longest conceivable shot is around 150 yards, so I have no experience with longer shots

I had to load mine lol, got the pulls for a good price years back. Wolf HP's do really well too, my dad pretty much just uses them on hogs and coyotes out his AR. My longest hit was a little over 300 with MK318, first shot was high, howled at him and he stopped, drilled him with the second shot. Hit him in the neck just forward of his shoulders, was a pretty gnarly wound. That was out of 20" barrel and I loaded them on hot side. You should have no problems with a 150 yard shot with the 69gr, it will jack them up.
